Ekalavya
Answer these questions.
1.) Why was Arjuna Drona’s favourite pupil?
Answer: There was no match for Arjuna. He was the only one who was skilled archer and could defeat anyone in archery.
2.) What happened when Drona took the Pandavas into the forest?
Answer: When Drona took the Pandavas into the forest, there were arrows stuck fast on the trees as if someone had been practising archery.
3.) Why was Drona surprised by what had happened? What did he do next?
Answer: The arrows were struck in such way that Drona understood that the person is not an ordinary man. He must be a skilled archer. They were the arrows of a true warrior which surprised Drona. Then he and his pupils set off in search of the person who could have shot the arrows.
4.) Why had Drona refused to accept Ekalavya as a pupil? How did the boy still succeed in making Drona his teacher?
Answer: Drona refused to accept Ekalavya as a pupil because he was not a Kshatriya. Eklavya’s desire to make Drona as his teacher was so great that he made clay image of him in the forest and then he started practicing archery with his bow and arrow.
5.) “And who is your teacher?” How did Drona react on hearing Ekalavya’s answer to this question?
Answer: Drona was obviously shocked that his image served as a teacher of Eklavya. Though his heart was full of envy he didn’t show it on his face and said to him that he had been there to test his knowledge.
6.) Why did Ekalavya readily agree to Drona’s suggestion of a contest with his pupils?
Answer: Since Ekalvaya considered Drona as his guru, he couldn’t doubt his intention so he readily agreed to his suggestions of a contest with his pupuils.
7.) How did Drona ensure that Arjuna remained the best archer in the world?
Answer: As a token of gratitude, Drona asked Ekalvaya to give him his thumb of his right hand. Drona knew that Ekalavya was greater than Arjuna in archery. Drona wanted Arjuna to remain the best archer so he asked the thumb of Ekalvaya’s right hand so that he could never draw his bow again.
