1) How does the poet bring about the comparison of life with the river? Explain it with reference to the poem.
Answer: The poet beautifully compares river with the stages of life. There is high use of metaphor in the poem. To begin with the poet describes how the river is bright with its sparkle. It shows us how it flows in dancing manner just like a child who enjoys life freely. The river at its childhood flows freely and in gay manner through flowers and clusters of leaves. The way human being’s life is at ease and free in childhood the river also flows freely in its early stage. After childhood comes the stage of youth in man’s life, in the same way the river is in its carefree youth. In youth stage, one is louder, faster and free in nature. It flows from hard to smooth surface taking every experience. This stage is of youth is full of enthusiasm and energy and the same is applied with the river. Then comes the stage of old age where time is still yet it moves slowly toward it last stage. Old age of river or man is deep. The way man moves silently toward its end the river to flows silently toward its eternity. In this way man’s four stages of life is compared to the river’s stages giving importance to each stage.
2) Describe how the poem clearly describes about the features, functions and destructive power of the river.
Answer: The four stages of human beings i.e. childhood, youth , old age and eternity is compared to the river. Each stage has something is show and from each pasing stage one changes and the river too changes. From its carefree flowing over the yellow pebbles to dashing into the sea it changes accordingly and destructs itself by getting into the sea. In each passing stage, the river takes and flows in different manner and ultimately leads to the eternity.
E) Based on your understanding of the poem, complete the summary of the poem by choosing the words/phrases given below.
In the poem ‘The River’, the poet compares the flow of the river with different stages of human life. The first stanza explains how the sparkling river goes dancing over the yellow pebbles and glancing through the flowers and leaves. These acts of the river is compared to a curious and innocent child at play. The second stanza compares the river to a reckless youth who goes through rough and smooth patches of life. Like a youth, here the river becomes louder, faster and sweeping everything all along the way. In the third stanza, the river becomes like a hard working man who is at theprime phase of the life. Here the deep and broad river seems motionless but it keeps moving towards the sea like a matured man who silently marches towards the goal. In the last stanza the long journey of the river reaches the endless sea like a human life attains eternity.
