Costa Rica is considered to be one of the healthiest countries in Central America. The main reason for this can be found in the Costa Rican Constitution. Several years ago, Costa Rica took a very important decision and decided not to have an army. This helped the Costa Rican government to spend the money that the army would have used, on health, education and other basic needs of the people. The Costa Rican government believes that a country has to be healthy for its development and pays a lot of attention to the health of its people. The Costa Rican government provides basic services and amenities to all Costa Ricans. For example, it provides safe drinking water, sanitation, nutrition and housing. Health education is also considered very important and knowledge about health is an essential part of education at all levels.

i.) Healthcare facilities are divided into two categories- Public health and Private health services. Hospitals and clinics run by doctors on their own are known are known as Private Sector of health.

Many medical practitioners prescribe unnecessary medicines, injections to earn more profit. Most of the people have to borrow money or their properties to pay for the expenses in a private hospital.
ii.) We pay taxes to the government as it provides different types of services such as education, healthcare, social welfare, vocational training, etc required by needy citizens. The government uses the tax money to provide services like defense, police, rehabilitation from natural disasters, etc. Government also uses money from taxes to provide for the poor who cannot avail services and facilities for themselves, for example healthcare.
iii.) India has a large number of doctors, clinics, hospitals and a huge experience and knowledge in running healthcare system. India has largest number of medical colleges in the world, around 30.000 new doctors qualify every year. India is also the third largest producer of medicines. Healthcare facilities have grown enormously in this country. In 1950 there were only 2717 government hospitals, in 1991 it became 11,174 hospitals. Presently, India has a total of 43,486 private hospitals, 25.770 public hospitals. Thus, India has developed enormously in the healthcare facilities. We receive a huge number of medical tourists from all over the world also.

i.) The government has a huge role in providing healthcare facilities to its citizens. According to our Constitution, it is the primary duty of the government to safeguard the welfare of the people, provide health care facilities to all. The government establishes hospitals and health centres in both rural and urban area. These heath centres are linked together and provide treatment to all kinds of diseases. At the village level, the government provides nurses, health workers at health centres. There are trained doctors at the Primary Health Centre (PHC). There are district hospitals at the district level supervising the health centres. All the large cities provide government hospitals which have mostly al modern facilities, medicines, etc to provide quality health-care. Another important of the government is to prevent of diseases like malaria, jaundice, cholera, etc through effective campaigns to promote awareness in the people. The Government also provides financial aids to the poor who cannot afford medical facilities.
ii.) Safe drinking water and proper maintenance and hygienic sanitation process are very important for good health.Waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, etc can be easily prevented through safe drinking water. As water is one of the essential elements for life, ensuring that every person gets safe drinking water is very important.The people should be made aware of using boiled drinking water or use medicines to purify water to avoid water borne diseases.As more and more people will have access to safe drinking water, they will be able to safeguard themselves from various diseases as well as their immunity will become stronger as contaminated water can easily affect one’s immunity. Moreover, having sanitary conditions and surroundings would also mean that diseases cannot spread easily. People who live in unsanitary conditions, for example near open sewers and waste-pits are more likely to fall ill. Diseases like dengue occur due to water-logging and unsanitary conditions. Therefore, improvement in water and sanitation can prevent in many diseases. Such improvement can be made through measures like efficient waste-management, wastewater treatment, providing sanitation facilities, etc.
