Regular verbs Examples in sentence:
i) To for past from of a regular verb we just need to add ed at the end of the root word.
Ex.
Cook- cooked, play- played, move- moved, listen-listened, mix- mixed, work- worked etc.
ii) If a verb ends with only e then just d will be added to that verb in past form.
Ex.
Assure- assured, examine- examined, dance- danced, smile- smiled etc.
iii) For verbs ending with y will be I in past and then ed will be added to that verb.
Ex.
Cry- cried, fry- fried, dry- dried, try- tried etc.
iv) In case of one syllable verbs ending with consonant-vowel-consonant, the last consonant will be double in past tense along with ed in it. Verbs ending with x, y, w do not take double consonant.
Ex.
Stun- stunned, drum- drummed, beg- begged, plan- planned etc.
v) If the last syllable of a verb ends with consonant-vowel-consonant and stress on the last consonant then last consonant will be double in past form.
Ex.
Refer- referred, input- inputted, prefer- preferred etc.
vi) Some regular verbs also use t in place of ed for turning into past forms.
Ex.
Sleep- slept, keep- kept, spend- spent, leave- left etc.
vii) Past form and past participle form of regular verbs are always alike.
Ex.
Combine- combined- combined, mix-mixed- mixed, play-played- played, leave- left- left, surround- surrounded- surrounded, focus- focus- focused, disturb- disturbed- disturbed, prepare- prepared- prepared, grab- grabbed- grabbed, open- opened- opened, return- returned- returned etc.
