(I) Answer the following questions:
(1) Name any four regional powers which rose in 18th century.
Ans: The Marathas, the Nizams of Hyderabad, Bengal, Avadh were the few regional powers that rose in the 18th Century.
(2) Give an account of the rise of Avadh in 18th century.
Ans: Saadat khan became the governor of Avadh in 1722 A.D. and after his death Safdar Jang became the ruler of Avadh. Saadat Khan paid special attention to agriculture. Shuja-ud-daulah became the ruler of Lucknow in 1754 A.D. After his death, Asaf-ud-daulah became the ruler of Avadh.
(3) How did the Sikhs rise to power in the 18th century?
Ans: The Mughals started atrocities with the Sikhs in the 18th century. In order to protest against the Mughals. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded Khalsa Panth in 1699 A.D. In the 18th Century, there were many wars between the shikhs and the Mughals such as – the battle of Anandpur Sahib, the battle of Chamkaur Sahib. In 1706 A.D Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji defeated the Mughals in the battle of Khidrana.
(4) How did Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan make Mysore powerful?
Ans: Hyder Ali in 1761 A.D became the ruler of Mysore. He adopted the policy of Tolerance towards other religion. He fought many battles with the Marathas, the Nizams of Hyderabad, the rulers of Karnataka and the British. Hyder Ali defeated the British in the first Anglo – Mysore war and in the second Anglo-Myore war, Hyder Ali died in 1782 A.D. He was succeeded by his Son Tipu Sultan and was known as the “Tiger of Mysore”. He was determined to put an end to the cruel rule of the British in India and introduced modern weapons in his army and tried to build a modern army. He died in 1799 in the fourth battle of Mysore against the British.
(5) Discuss the role of Shivaji in establishing the Maratha Empire.
Ans: Shivaji was the founder of the Maratha Dynasty, born on 20th April 1627 A.D. at Shivner in Pune. He was a patriot and wanted to end the Mughal rule in India. In 1646 A.D. Shivaji occupied the fort of Toran from Ali Adil Shah. In 1648 A.D., he occupied the forts of Purandhar, Kondana, Konkan, Kalyani and Singh garh. After the death of Dadaji Kondan, he also occupied Pune in 1648 AD. Shivaji declared himself an independent rule and assumed the title as Chattarpati in 1674 A.D. He died in 1680 A.D.
