Ans: Alexander was a Greek conqueror from Macedonia, who invaded India in 326 B.C. and conquered the Indian states in the North-West upto river Beas in Punjab.
(2) Write a note about Kautilya.
Ans: Chanakya known as Kautilya was a great scholar who wrote Arthasastra. He was a teacher at the Taxila University. He became the Prime minister of the Mauryan Empire when Chandragupta was the king of Magadha.
(3) Why is Ashoka called ‘great’?
Ans: Ashoka was considered a “great” ruler because of his message of peace and humanity for the word. In 261 B.C. he conquered Kalinga and was greatly affected by the bloodshed of this war and then he gave upon on war for the rest of his life, and became a follower of Buddhism.
(4) What do you know about Mauryan art?
Ans: The Mauryan age embarks a rich and varied art and architecture. There were beautiful places made by Chandragupta Maurya, stupas and Pillars built by Ashoka, one of them being the Sanchi stupa of Madhya Pradesh. Ashoka also built caves with beautiful designs in the hills of Barabar and Nagarjani in Bihar. The Great Sculptures of four lions seated back to back is the national Emblem of India presently.
