Net Neutrality Essay : Net neutrality is the rule or obligation that an internet service provider (ISP), like BSNL broadband, Airtel broadband, Jio Fiber etc. has to provide access to all websites, web content and online applications at the same speed, under the same conditions and without blocking or giving special preference to any content on the internet. Also known as Net equality. Some of the Major countries that have enforced Net Neutrality are Japan, Mexico, Netherlands etc.
Purposes of Benefits of Net Neutrality
1) With net neutrality, Internet Service Providers may not block, slow down, or charge money for certain online content for viewing or downloading purpose.
2) Without net neutrality, Internet Service Providers may give more importance to certain web content and may charge additional charges based of the network traffic or may block certain content from specific services, while charging consumers for various other online services.
3) Net Neutrality will enforce an obligation with Internet Service Providers not prioritize any web pages or content based on its higher importance or usage, but to give equal priority to all webpages and websites and internet content and services.
4) The speed of the internet will also not be compromised as the speed of the internet shall be delivered equally to all users, including small businesses and large companies at the same pace.
5) Net Neutrality could also make it compulsory for ISP’s provide safe and secure internet services at no additional charges and equally to all users.
Disadvantages of Net Neutrality
1) Nowadays YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have taken over the internet with huge amount of data been used specially for these applications. A lot of software’s, music and movies are downloaded illegally, changes will put a restriction on these applications to a large extent.
2) The various companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple have created services that allow people to make calls for free on networks like face time, google meet, Microsoft teams etc. that other telecom companies have spent a huge amount to create. Net neutrality proves to be an injustice to these companies.
3) Net neutrality does not allow new innovation in technology but causes stoppage in innovation. The Telecom companies charges higher fees for higher bandwidth to the upper class, but will not invest in better fiber technologies that will help and support the smaller group to use more affordable internet services with higher bandwidth.
4) Some level of restriction and prioritization is necessary to support the interest of consumers. As some consumers prefer using the internet only for online gaming, while some only for watching movies. This will help the ISP’s to suit individual consumer needs of the internet usage and the type of bandwidth required.
Conclusion
