Working with the poem
1.) The cricket says, “Oh! what will become of me?” When does he say it,
and why?
Answer: When the winter was approaching the cricket became a bit nervous and asks what will he become. He says this because all the happy weather suddenly changed into sad one.
2.) (i) Find in the poem the lines that mean the same as “Neither a borrower nor a lender be” (Shakespeare).
Answer: But we ants never borrow; we ants never lend-these lines from the poem has the same meaning of Shakespear’s lines-‘’Neither a borrower nor a lender be’’.
(ii) What is your opinion of the ant’s principles?
Answer:The ants are firm believer of neither borrowing nor lending policy. This makes clear that they are clear in their approach and one should try to inculcate this principle in life.
3.) The ant tells the cricket to “dance the winter away”. Do you think the word‘dance’ is appropriate here? If so, why?
Answer: Yes, the phrase dance the winter away is appropriate here as it suggests that the cricket should enjoy the winter the way he would enjoy summer.
4.) (i) Which lines in the poem express the poet’s comment? Read them aloud.
Answer: Folks call this a fable. I’ll warrant it true: Some crickets have four legs, and some have two-these lines in the poem express the poet’s comment.
(ii) Write the comment in your own words.
Answer: People say that this is a not a true story but what I feel is that this is story of those who spend irresponsibly and face problems. There are two kinds of people-first the ones who earn and spend it at the same time just like cricket in such condition they don’t think about future and just think of present. These kind of people often land themselves in trouble and regret .Then there are people who earn and save some for the future use ,such people are balanced ones and rarely face problem of money.
