(1) What is meant by recruitment? How is it different from selection?
Ans: Recruitment refers to the process of finding possible candidates for a job or a function.
Recruitment is different from selection in following manner:
(i) Recruitment refers to the search of prospective employees for a job whereas selection refers to selecting such employees for the job.
(ii) Recruitment is considered as a positive process as it involves inducing now person in the organisation whereas selection is a negative process as it eliminates the unsuitable candidates.
(2) An organisation provides security services. It requires such candidates who are reliable and don’t leak out the secrets of their clients. What steps should be incorporated in selection process?
Ans: The steps incorporated in selection process are as follows:
(i) Preliminary screening: This step helps the manager to eliminate the misfit candidates from the job position based on the information supplied in applications forms.
(ii) Selection test (Personality Test): This test provides clues to a person’s emotions reactions, maturity, value system etc.
(iii) Reference and background checks: Many employees seeks for names, address etc of references for the purpose of verifying information References can be a previous employee, known persons, teachers or professors etc.

(i) Transfer: It is one of the made of internal sources of recruitment through which shortage of suitable personnel in one branch may be filled through transfer from other branch or department.

(ii) Internal recruitment simplifies the process of selection & placement as the candidates that are already working in the enterprise can evaluated more accurately and economically.
(iii) Transfer is a tool of training the employees to prepare them for higher jobs. It has the benefit of shifting workforce from surplus departments to shortage of staffs.
(6) “No organisation can be successful unless it fills and keeps the various positions filed with the right kind of people for the right job.” —–
Ans: The above statement can be justified with the importance of the staffing functions in an organisation:
(i) It is important to find “the right person for the right job” and staffing is the process that understands the manpower requirement within the organisation.
(ii) Staffing involves identifying the potential sources from where the requirement of manpower can be fulfilled i.e. either from within the organisation or from outside.
(iii) As “The right person” is scarce, there is need to “market” the job and the organisation to the people. In situation where a single job vacancy might attract few hundreds of the applicants, there is a challenge of selecting the most appropriate one.
(iv) The selected employees may need training for upgradation of knowledge and skills and this is also a part of the staffing process.

Fast changing technology developments necessitated new skill development and training of employees. It is important to understand that staffing is both a function of management as well as a distinct functional area of management and an essential function of the manager as well as advisory role played by the human resource department.
(2) Explain the procedure for selection of employees.
Ans: The process for selection of employees in an organisation are as —–.

(ii) Selection test: It is a mechanism that attempts to measure certain characteristics of individuals that range from aptitudes, intelligence etc.
(iii) Employment interview: It is a formal, in-depth conversation conducted to evaluate the applicant’s suitability for the job.

(v) Selection Decision: The final decision has to be made from among the candidates who pas the tests, interviewers and reference checks
