1.) What changes can you make in your habits to become more environment friendly?
Ans. I) I will surely make changes in my habits to become more environment friendly. I will adopt the following changes-
ii) I will switch off electric plugs and water taps when not needed.
iii) I will walk if I have work at nearby location.
iv) I will use bus or trains more often than my private vehicle.
v) I will use electric charging scooters instead of traditional one.
2.) What would be the advantages of exploiting resources with short-term aims?
Ans. Exploitation of resources might be beneficial for short- term aims as follows-
It will make raw materials available in more amount. This availability of raw materials will lead to increased production of goods thereby increasing commerce and boosting up the economy.
3.) How would these advantages differ from the advantages of using a long term perspective in managing our resources?
Ans. but the advantage we get for short- term aims will differ from the long term perspective as the unsustainable use of the natural resources will lead to their wastage causing the problems like pollution. It will also lead to depletion of our scarce natural resources and we will be unable to use them when we will really need them.
4.) Why do you think that there should be equitable distribution of resources?
What forces would be working against an equitable distribution of our resources?
Ans. resources should be distributed equally so that anyone can use them. Unfortunately, corruption, overexploitation of the resources, poaching, etc. Work against this equitable distribution of our resources.

1.) Why should we conserve forests and wildlife?
Ans. Forest is an vary important and valuable natural resources and we should protect it because-
i) Forests are the source of forest produce such as gums, resins, flowers, medicines, wood, timber, etc.
ii) Hence, they provide the raw materials required to the industry.
iii) They play a very important role in balancing the nature.
iv) Forests are the natural habitats for many plants and wild animals.
2.) Suggest some approaches towards the conservation of forests.
Ans. we can conserve our forest by undertaking some conservation approaches as follows:
i) We can declare certain area to be protected by law as National Parks, Reserved Forest, Wildlife sanctuary, etc.

1.) Find out about the traditional systems of water harvesting/
management in your region.
Ans. traditional systems of water harvesting in my region are:
Bandharas (Maha.), vihir,etc.
2.) Compare the above system with the probable systems in hilly/ mountainous areas or plains or plateau regions.
Ans. Plain or plateau regions don’t have sloped whereas mountainous area have slope. Therefore water harvesting system is different for plains and for mountainous area. Plains have moon like areas whereas in mountainous region, running water is collected at the slopes and it is conserved there.
3.) Find out the source of water in your region/locality. Is water from this source available to all people living in that area?
Ans. The source of water in my locality is municipality circulated water through taps. In some areas, we also have hapshi and vihir (well). Some people have borewell in their poarch.
No, the water from this sources is not available to all the people living in this area during summer season.
b.) Exercise :
1) What changes would you suggest in your home in order to be environment-friendly?
Ans. Changes I would suggest in my home to be environment friendly as:
a) Using solar energy wherever possible
b) Instead of burning lights and fans only for me, I would adjust in hall to save energy
c) Making compost for plants from leftover vegetables, fruits and food.
Alternative Answer –
- Use only as much water as needed without wasting too much.
- Use electricity only when needed and switch off all electrical appliances when not needed.
- Instead of anti-environmental materials like plastic, use eco-friendly materials.
- Do not throw non-biodegradable wastes into lakes, rivers and seas.
2.) Can you suggest some changes in your school which would make it environment friendly?
Ans.
a) Banning use of plastic bags.
b) Avoiding wastage of food and drinking water
c) Planting trees and plants of various species to make campus environment friendly
d) Putting garbage in the dustbin only instead of throwing it anywhere.
Alternative Answer –
- Switching off all electrical appliances in the school before leaving the school in the evening time.
- Using public transport to go to school and home.
- Use vehicles only when necessary, otherwise practice walking as much as possible.
- Among the waste materials generated in the school, separate classification of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste materials.
- Recycling of unwanted paper waste in school.
3.) We saw in this chapter that there are four main stakeholders when it comes to forests and wildlife. Which among these should have the authority to decide the management of forest produce? Why do you think so?
Ans. People living in and around the forest area who get their living from the forest, The forest department of government, Industrialists and Wildlife and nature enthusiastic who are interested in the conservation of forest resources are the four main stakeholders to forests and wildlife.
Out of the this four, the people living in and around the forest area should have authority to decide the management of forest produce because this are the poor tribal people who are living in the forest areas since a long time and are depend on the forest produce for getting food as well as living. They do not exploit forest resources as they have traditional knowledge too for sustainable use of the forest.
Alternative Answer –
Whether there is any production from the forest land, or any damage to the forest, in both cases the entire responsibility of the forest rests with the Forest Department. Thus, the forest department of the government should have both the authority and the responsibility to decide the management of forest production.
4.) How can you as an individual contribute or make a difference to the management of (a) forests and wildlife, (b) water resources and (c) coal and petroleum?
Ans.
a) forest and wildlife:
i) We should not cut any plant just for fun.
ii) Poaching of Wild animals should be prohibited.
b) water resources:
i) Discharge of waste water and sewage water inside the water body should be discouraged.
ii) We should not throw garbage and plastic bags inside the water bodies as they chock them making flood like situations.
iii) By effectively practicing the rainwater harvesting techniques.
Turning off the taps when we get enough amount of water needed.
c) coal and petroleum:
i) Using coal energy only when other sources of energy are not available or suitable.
ii) Using public transport instead of private vehicles to conserve energy.
Alternative Answer –
a.) Forest and wildlife.
- We should not take away the habitat of wild animals by destroying the forest for our selfishness and building buildings of our choice.
- To make people aware that hunting wild animals is wrong.
b.) Water resources
- Non-biodegradable waste materials should not be thrown into rivers, likes and seas.
- Use water only when needed without wasting too much.
