- Very Short Answer Questions
7) Veins have valves which allow blood to flow only in one direction. Arteries do not have valves. Yet the blood flows in one direction only. Can you explain why?
Answer:- Arteries are the carrier of oxygen rich blood. It supplies oxygenated blood from heart to all body parts. The blood flow in the arteries is very rapid and thus the arteries have thick walled elastic walls. Thus Arteries not have valves but then also blood flows in one direction only.
8) What is the special feature present in a human heart which does not allow mixing of blood when oxygen – rich and carbon dioxide – rich blood reach the heart ?
Answer:- Heart is a muscular pumping organ of the body, which beats continuously that is pumping to transport the blood all over the body. Heart is located in the chest cavity slightly towards the left. The oxygenated and deoxygenated both type of blood reaches to the heart. To avoid the mixing of these two types of blood heart have a special feature that is four chambers. The upper two chambers are known as atria (single – atrium) and lower two chambers are known as ventricles. There is partition between these four chambers to avoid the mixing of blood.
9) Name the organ which is located in the chest cavity with its lower tip slightly tilted towards the left.
Answer:- Heart is the muscular organ which is present in the body located at chest cavity with its lower tip slightly towards the left. Is it a pumping organ which is continuously working to supply blood to all over the body.
Heart is located in the chest cavity between lungs slightly towards left.

10) Look at figure 11.1 Draw another figure of the same set-up as would be observed after a few hours.
Answer:-
The same figure is drawn below with the changes observed after a few hours.
11) Arrange the following statements in the correct order in the which they occur during the formation and removal of urine in human beings.
a) Ureters carry urine to the urinary bladder.
b) Wastes dissolved in water is filtered out as urine in the kidneys.
c) Urine stored in urinary bladder is passed out through the urinary opening at the end of the urethra.
d) Blood containing useful and harmful substances reaches the kidneys for filtration.
e) Useful substances are absorbed back into the blood.
Answer:-
d) Blood containing useful and harmful substances reaches the kidneys for filtration.
e) useful substances are absorbed back into the blood.
b) wastes dissolved in water is filtered out as urine in the kidneys.
a) Ureters carry urine to the urinary bladder.
c) Urine stored in urinary bladder is passed out through the urinary opening at the end of the urethra.
(d →e→b→a → c)
12) Paheli uprooted a rose plant from the soil. Most of the root tips, with root hairs got left behind in the soil. She planted it in a pot with new soil and watered it regularly. Will the plant grow or die ? Give reason for your answer.
Answer:- Roots perform the function of Absorption of water which contains minerals and nutrients from the soil. Roots have small root Hairs which are responsible for the work. If the root Hairs are not there the plant will not be able to absorb nutrients and plant may die .
The stem which is rooted in pot may grow new roots and plant may survive.
She planted the rose plant in the new soil, it will not be able survive in another type of soil. If the soil type is same then the plant may grow.
13) A) Name the only artery that carries carbon dioxide rich blood.
Answer:- pulmonary artery is the only artery which carries carbon dioxide rich blood. Other arteries carry oxygenated rich blood.
B) Why is it called an artery if it does not carry oxygen – rich blood ?
Answer:- It does not carry oxygen rich blood but it carries deoxygenated blood from the heart therefore it is called an artery not the vein.
14) Boojhoo’s uncle was hospitalised and put on dialysis after a severe infection in both of his kidneys.
a) What is dialysis?
Answer:- Sometimes when a person is not able to excrete unwanted waste from the body due to kidneys failure. As a result of kidney failure unwanted toxic waste starts accumulating in the body. At these time the waste has to remove from the body through artificial kidney and the process is known as dialysis.
b) When does it become necessary to take such a treatment?
Answer:- Dialysis is necessary when there is kidney failure. Kidney stop the working of excretion of unwanted harmful toxic substances from the body due to infection or injuryit is failure of kidney. Then dialysis treatment works as a artificial kidney.
15) Name the process and the organ which helps in removing the following wastes from the body.
a) Carbon dioxide
Process:- exhalation
Organ. :- lungs
b) Undigested food
Process:- Egestion
Organ:- large intestines and anus
c) Urine
Process:- excretion
Organ :- kidneys
d) Sweat
Process:- sweating
Organ :- sweat glands
16) Observe figure 11.2 and answer the given questions:
a) Name the instrument.
Answer:- stethoscope is the given instrument which is used for the measuring heartbeats.
b) Label the parts A,B, and C.
Answer:-
- Diaphragm
- Tube
- Ear pieces
17) Paheli noticed water being pulled up by a motor pump to an overhead tank of a five storeyed building . She wondered how water moves up to great heights in the tall trees standing next to the building. Can you tell why?
Answer:- Generally Absorption of water and minerals are occurs by the roots of the plants. Roots have root Hairs which increases in the surface area for the absorption of nutrients and minerals dissolved in water. These transportation occur through a pipe like vessels which are made up of special cells i.e vascular tissue.A group of cells which is called as tissue, which performs the function. Xylem is a vascular tissue which transports water and nutrients all over the plants. Another one phloem tissue is present in plants which performs the function of transportation of food made by the leaves.
But all the absorbed water is not used by the plants. Some water evaporated through stomata which is present at the lower side of the leaves by the process of Transpiration.
The water is evaporated from the leaves by a process called suction pull. Which is responsible for the water moving up in the tall trees. It also cools the plant.

20) Fill-in the blanks of the following paragraph using just two words arteries and veins.
_____(a)______ carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to all parts of the body and ____(b)__ carry carbon dioxide- rich blood from all parts the body back to the heart. ____(c)____ have thin walls and _____(d)____ have thick elastic walls. Blood flows at high pressure in ____(e)_____ . Valves are present in _____(f)_____ which allow blood to flow only towards the heart. _____(g)_____ divide into smaller vessels. These vessels further divide into extremely thin tubes called capillaries. The capillaries join up to form ______(h)______.
Answer:-
Arteries carry oxygen – rich blood from the heart to all parts of the body and veins carry dioxide- rich blood from all parts of the body to the heart. Veins have thin walls and arteries have thick electric walls. Blood flows at high pressure in arteries. Valves are present in veins which allow blood to flow only towards the heart. Arteries divide into smaller vessels. These vessels further divide into extremely thin tubes called capillaries. The capillaries join up to form veins.
21) While learning to ride a bicycle Boojho lost his balance and fell. He got bruises on his knees and it started bleeding. However, the bleeding stopped after some time.
A) Why did the bleeding stop?
Answer:- bleeding stop due to the clotting of blood. When there is loss of blood out of body due to injury then the blood cells called as platelets carry a process known as clotting. Which stops the blood flow.
B) What would be the colour of the wounded area and why?
Answer:- The colour of the wounded area will be dark red . Due to the clotting of blood plugged over there.
C) Which type of blood cells are responsible for clotting of blood?
Answer:- clotting of blood is due to the presence of Platelets cells in the blood.
