Q3. Very Short Answer Type Questions:
i.) Major continents of the Earth: -Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica.
ii.) The Biosphere is a narrow zone of contact between land, water and air in the earth. It is the zone in which all the living beings of this come into life.
iii.) Earth is called a “blue planet” as more than 71 per cent of the earth is covered with water.
iv.) Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa from India were two men to climb Mt. Everest.
v.) A strait is a narrow passage of water which connects two bigger water bodies like oceans and seas. Ex; Palk strait between India and Pakistan
Isthmus – It is a narrow strip of land than connects two land masses. Ex: The Isthmus of Panama that links the continents of North and South America
vi.) The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean which spreads over one-third of the earth’s surface.
Section -C
Q4. Short Answer Type Questions:
i.) Atmosphere is the thin layer of different gases that surround the earth like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and other gases etc. It provides the air we breathe and saves us from harmful rays of the sun. Hydrosphere – The earth’s surface is covered with water, this is known as Hydrosphere. Water in all its forms like water vapor, ice, running water, rivers, lakes, underground water all are part of Hydrosphere. More than 71% of the earth’s surface is covered with water.
ii.) The Northern Hemisphere consists the greater part of the landmass of the earth which is more than 70% of the total land area of the earth’s surface. Thus, it is called Land Hemisphere. The portion of water is smaller here which is only 30% of the total area of the Northern Hemisphere.
iii.) We face scarcity of water on Earth because 97% of water present on the earth’s surface is present in the oceans and it is salty in taste and not possible to use for human consumption. Another large part of water is present in the form of ice sheets and glaciers and underground water. A very little portion of fresh water is available on earth for human consumption.
Section -D
Q5. Long Answer Type Questions:
i.) Antarctica is a huge continent which lies completely in the Southern Hemisphere. The South Pole is at the centre of the continent. It is completely covered in ice and there are no permanent human settlements in this continent. Many countries have made research stations for performing important scientific experiments and studies. Maitri and Bharati are research centres of India present in Antarctica.
ii.) In modern days the presence of industries, thermal power plants, vehicles have caused pollution of air, water and land. The emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) in an uncontrollable amount increase the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere causing various changes in it. This is called Global Warming. Global Warming has severe effect on the biosphere. It causes hotter temperatures, severe storms, scarcity in rainfall, draught, rise in the level of oceans, change in ocean currents, loss of various species of animals and different types of diseases. It is very important to control the rise of global warming to maintain the balance of land, water and air for the survival of all the species of living things on the earth.
