(3) I get heated due to the land or water near me -> Planet.
(4) Land and water get heated due to me -> solar radiation.
(C) Explain with a diagram, the effect of the spherical shape of the earth on the temperature at different latitudes.
Ans:- Sunrays falling on the earth are straight and parallel to each other. However, we have seen that due to the spherical shape of the earth and the resultant curvature of the surface, they occupy a larger or lesser area. They Leads to unequal distribution of the heat received from the sun, resulting in decreasing temperature from the equator to the north and south poles. Based on the distribution of temperature, the earth can be divided into torrid, temperature and frigid zones of tropical, temperature and Polar Regions.
Though latitude is the main factor, there are other factors also which influence the distribution of temperature.
More Extra Questions from this Chapter:
1.)) How does the effect of sun rays and the angular distance of the sun affect the earth ?
A:- The sun ray radiate vertically over the earth. But the earth is round or sphere and the sun’s rays cannot reach all parts of the earth vertically. This causes the sun’s rays to fall perpendicular in some parts of the earth slant in others . As a result the heat of the sun is higher in some parts of the earth and lower in other parts of the world. The reason for this –
- If the sun radiates vertically it spreads over a relatively small area resulting in a large amount of sunlight in that area which causes the area to heat up very quickly.
- When the sun radiates slant it spreads over a large area resulting in relatively less bright sunlight reaching that area which makes the place relatively less hot.
2.) How many parts of the world can be divided on the basis of temperature ?
A:- The earth can be divided into three parts on the basis of temperature – torrid, temperate, frigid zones .
3.) _____ is the main factor the distribution of temperature.
A:- Latitude
4.) What are the causes of regional climate change ?
A:- Nearness to the sea, continentality, height above the mean sealevel and physical set-up of a region cloud cover, winds, vegetation cover, urbanization, industrialization, etc these are the causes of regional climate change .
5.) Why is the air in the coastal region warm and humid?
A:- In coastal areas sea water receives large amounts of sunlight during the day which mixes water vapor into the air. This water vapor retains heat in the air, causing the air in the coastal region to become warm and humid .
6.) The difference in the maximum and minimum temperatures of a day is called __________________________.
A:- diurnal range of temperature
7.) The difference in the mean temperatures of summer and winter is called _________________ of temperature.
A:- annual range
8.) which gases help to increase the temperature of the air ?
A:- carbon dioxide and water vapour helps to increase air temperature .
9.) What is green house gas ?
A:- The gas for which the earths temperature is increasing is called the greenhouse gas.
10.) what is global warming or global rise in temperature ?
A:- According to the scientists the earths temperature is rising day by day due to green house gases this increase is called global rising temperature.
11.) Plankton grows in which region ?
A:- Areas where warm and cold currents meet are ideal for plankton growth .
12.) Plankton breed in __________________ waters .
A:- Waters
13.) What is the freezing point of mercury and alcohol thermometers?
A:- The freezing point of mercury is -39°C whereas that of alcohol is – 130°C.
14.) Thermometers usually measure temperature from how many degrees Celsius to how many degree Celsius ?
A:- Thermometers usually measure temperatures from 30 c to 55 c .
- The units of measuring temperature are ________________ or ________________________.
A:- Celsius or Fahrenheit
- Air temperature is measured in ______________________ .
A:- Celsius
17.) Match the following:
UNITS | ISOLINE |
Height | Isotherms |
Rainfall | Isobars |
Pressure | Contours |
Temperature | Isohytes |

Multiple choice questions: (marks:1)
1.) The shape of the Earth is:
- a) Spherical
- b) Round
- c) Pear
Ans: Spherical.
Answer the following questions: (marks:1)
1.) What do you mean by the range of temperature?
Ans: The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures of a day is called diurnal range of temperature.
2.) What is a temperature ?
Ans: temperature is a measurement of heat of an entity or a place.
3.) What are the measuring units of temperature?
Ans: Degree celsius and degree Fahrenheit are the best units of temperature.
4.) What is isotherm?
Ans: Isotherm is a line on the map joining places of equal temperature is called an isotherm.
Answer the following questions: (marks:2/3)
1.) Based on the distribution of temperature, what are the divisions of Earth?
Ans: Based on the distribution of temperature, the Earth can be divided into torrid, temperature and frigid zones or tropical, temperate and polar regions.
2.) What are the factors that influence the distribution of temperature?
Ans: The main factors that influence the distribution of temperature are:
- Latitude
- Nearness to the sea
- Continentality
- Height above the mean sea level
- Physical setup of a region Other factors are:
- Cloud cover
- Winds
- Vegetation cover
- Urbanization
- Industrialization
3.) What do you know about greenhouse gases?
Ans: Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which retain the heat. Due to these gases, air temperature increases. These gases include carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbon or CFC, water vapour, etc. Due to the increase in the radiation of these gases in the earth’s atmosphere, the temperature of the earth is increasing.
4.) What are planktons?
Ans: The plankton are the plant or animal microorganisms floating in sea waters, or moving at a very slow speed. These are the feed for fishes. Hence, the areas of sea where planktons are abundantly found are the areas where fish population is always high. The regions where warm and cold currents converge are favourable for the growth of planktons.
5.) What are the effects of perpendicular rays on the Earth?
Ans: Sun Rays coming towards the earth travel in straight lines. However, as the earth is spherical in shape, these are not perpendicular to all the parts of the earth’s surface. In some parts they are perpendicular whereas in other parts they are slanting. The effect of perpendicular rays on the Earth are:
- The perpendicular rays occupy less area. The part where the rays occupy a lesser area receives bright sunshine and greater heat. Hence the surface there gets heated more and the air becomes hotter.
- The slant rays occupy a larger area. In this area, sunlight appears less bright and there is less heat. Hence the surface there gets less heated and the air too, is less hot.
