Brainstorming:
A1) i) c) James Strand.
James strand was the actual robber who robbed the bank of England and Mr. Fogg got arrested for his conduct mistakenly. James strand was mentioned only at the time of his arrest before Mr. Fogg which clearly showed that he is not a major character.
ii)
Phileas Fogg | Eccentric, calm, patient, generous, compassionate, intelligent, courageous, fastidious, punctual, adventurous, confident, determined. |
Aouda | Loyal, honest, kind, graceful, caring, grateful, charming, intuitive. |
Passepartout | Faithful, energetic, gullible, brave, innocent, hardworking, loyal, endearing, humorous. |
Detective Fix | Responsible, determined, regretful, dutiful, well-mannered. |
iii)
Passepartout was completely opposite character in the novel that of Phileas Fogg. Fogg was always remained calm and composed in even worst situation but Passepartout was always clumsy and gullible in serious matters. Mr. Fogg used to think much before reaching any conclusion by analysing the whole issue with related factors. But Mr. Fogg was easily influenced to others’ words for his gullible, innocent and naïve personality. We got valid example of his clumsiness when he got manipulated by Mr. Fix who hid his true motive and resulted in Mr. Fogg’s arrest in Liverpool. Passepartout was always full of energy and lively person who was different from Mr. Fogg who was under figuring out things. Passepartout was obedient to his master and fulfilled all his duties for providing comfort and happiness to his master. When Mr. Fogg was in severe tension of losing the bet still he remained composed in place of messing up with situation. On the other hand, Passepartout showed his guilt and regret throughout the extract for being responsible behind his master’s arrest and complicated situation. From the line ‘wept till he was blind, and felt like blowing his brains out’ we got to know his burdened heart with guilt. Though Mr. Fogg was on the verge of losing everything in life still he handled his situation maturely. But Passepartout was full of anxious and worried for his master. Passepartout event went to Aouda for talking with his master and making him respond as he wanted to be alone for analysing the situation. In this way, we got Passpartout’s emotional, impulsive and restless character which was opposite in contrast of Mr. Fogg’s calm, composed and mature personality.
iv) Detective fix was the responsible and determined inspector who suspected Mr. Fogg in the charge of robbery in the bank of England. He got confirmed on his suspicion after getting the resemblance drawing of the robber. Still he could not arrest Mr. Fogg because he did not have official warrant then. But he did not want him away of his vision so he followed Fogg in all the places of the world during his travel. In that due course, he tried many efforts for putting Fogg into trouble by keeping obstacles in his path. Though he had instincts of accepting Fogg as innocent still he followed his duty of catching the guilty of robbery. So, he was firm in his position which was part of his profession. Besides that he aimed to gain the rewards which was there for catching the robber. He was noble in his duty for catching the robber but he showed immorality by manipulating Passepartout to be succeed in his motives. After a lot of efforts Fix arrested Fogg in Liverpool after getting the warrant. For that Fogg failed to reach reformer club in time. Soon after the real robber was caught and Mr. Fix realised about his mistake finally. He felt ashamed and released Mr. Fogg. In anger Fogg punched him but he did not mind and believed that he deserved it. So, Mr. Fix remain unsuccessful to prove the charge of robbery on Mr. Fogg despite putting lots of efforts.
v) Aouda was the charming, young and beautiful lady whom Mr. Fogg rescued from the dangerous situation during his crossing through India. He brought her to London with him for providing her safety and security. Aouda was quite adventurous who trusted and accompanied Fogg throughout his journey in various places allover the world. She was kind-hearted and grateful to Fogg for saving her life. The gratitude towards Foggsoon turned into love. Through Fogg was serious, tough and mature person she could not synchronise with him before. But later she recognised his soften side in heartduring their conversation when Fogg opened up about him. She showed her loyal side when she wept bitterly after Fogg’s arrest. When Fogg was in vulnerable and helpless situation she requested Passepartout for being with him lifelong. On the surface we knew Fogg as emotionless and practical person but with gentleness and caring of Aouda we came to know the tender heart of Fogg too. She had self-respect too which she proved by loving Fogg in every situation till end. She was so confident and bold about her love that she came ahead first to propose Fogg for marriage. In the novel, it seemed that Mr. Fogg did not get much through his journey during travel. But he addressed himself as ‘happiest of men’ after finding Aouda’s love which was the ultimate reward for him. Though he won the bet from his friends, winning Aouda’s love was the most significant and biggest victory of all as he learned the importance of human connection in life from Aouda.

The sudden change in the mood of the novel impressed the readers which they knew in the last chapter. Passepartout conveyed the fact to Fogg in the line ‘because to-morrow is Sunday’. But the narrator asked the readers how it could be possible to make an error by a calculative and strategic person like Fogg through the lines ‘how was it that a man so exact and fastidious could have made this error of a day?’. The answer is hidden in this line ‘Phileas Fogg had without suspecting it, gained one day on his journey, and this merely because he had travelled constantly eastward’.
