Nose strongly kept forward its own verdict that the spectacle fully depends on it. It is the support system for the spectacle.
ON THE EYES–
Eyes also said that without it, there is no use of the spectacles, if eyes are shut, no one will be able to see.
But in the poem verdict was in the favour of the nose.
iii.) “Lend thy ears to all but few thy tongue”…. is a famous quote by William Shakespeare. Justify.
Ans.The quote “Lend thy ears to all but few thy tongue” by William Shakespeare suggests that one must put their ears to everyone’s arguments and viewpoints, we should try to listen to everyone and everything. Listening is a very good quality. It makes us understand things and make a clear viewpoint. Giving our opinion must be done very cautiously.
On the other hand, we should think as many times before we say anything. We should be careful enough before we out forth our words. Unless and until we are sure of our words, we then only speak.
A3.) Pick out examples of Inversion from the poem.
Ans. Examples of Inversion from the poem are-
a) “Between Nose and Eyes, a strange contest arose,”
b) “Again would your lordship a moment suppose,”
c) “That the visage or countenance had not a Nose, Pray who would, or who could, wear spectacles then?”
A4.) Justify the verdict delivered in the poem.
I can support my answer with the help of the following suitable arguments:
Ans. a)It has been proven since years that nose hold the spectacles.
b) The spectacles are designed in a way that it fits appropriately on the nose, as if they were made to fit in with each other. There’s a straddle provided in between the spectacles, which is meant for the nose to hold it.
c) And just think for once, if you don’t have a nose, you will not be able to wear a spectacle.
ii.) Compose two lines of your own on any sensory organ.
Ans. How powerful the tongue is….
If used it wisely,
It say things nicely.
But can it be as sharp as a knife,
Oh yes, it can make you whine for life.
So, as it is said, wisely make use of your tongue..
So that it never and never hurt anyone and stung.
iii.) Imagine that you are a lawyer defending the case of the eyes in court. Present your counter-statement in support of your client.
Ans.My Lord,
I want to present my verdict in favour of my client Eyes.
Eyes are the gift of the Numen to see the beauty in everything created by him. It is considered as the first sensory organ in a human body.
So, here also if talk about the case presented in the court that to whom the spectacle belongs, weather it is the nose or the eyes. I will put forth some points in favour of client.
Firstly, someone is prescribed to wear a spectacle when his/her eye sight is weak. Spectacle is related to eyes, to the hilt.
It is next to impossible that eyes will be kept shut when someone will put on the spectacle. What will be the use of it, then?
I agree that without Nose, the spectacles would not get required support or it won’t be staggered properly, but that is of secondary use. The first and foremost relation of spectacle is with the eyes, because without eyes, there will not be any need for the spectacles.
A5.) Write the appreciation of the poem.
(Both appreciation and the summary can be written with the help of the points given in previous poems.)
Ans. This satirical poem ‘Nose versus Eyes’ by William Cowper is a take on the judiciary system. It also mocks at the stone blind justice in a humorous manner emphasising upon the lack of empathy and common sense.
The poet William Cooper was one of the most popular 18th century English poets and composers of hymns. His poems deal with Nature and everyday life. He is aptly described by Samuel T. Coleridge as the ‘Best Modern Poet’ of his times.
The theme of the poem revolves around the proceedings of a court where judgment is passed without considering the practicality and logic of the whole case. The poet indirectly hinted towards the poor discernment of the judiciary system.
The rhyme scheme of the poem is ‘abab’ which makes the poem flow aesthetically. There are quite a number of literary devises used in the poem like Imagery, Simile, Personification, and Inversion. Inversion has been used throughout the poem to maintain the rhyming pattern and give poetic effect to it. For example- “The point in dispute was, as all the world knows”, “On the whole it appears, and my argument shows.” Cooper had beautifully personified the eyes, nose, and tongue. Poet had assigned each of the organs some human roles, which added jest to the poetry. For example- “So Tongue was the lawyer, and argued the cause”, “While Chief Baron Ear sat to balance the laws, So famed for his talent in nicely discerning.”
Though the poem is a mock on the legal system and judiciary, but it gives a deep message as well that hoe important it is to carry the legal proceedings carefully and how a wrong decree can result in a lifetimeloss. The poem also brings forth the non-success of the judiciary system in delivering the apt justice. The irony of the poem is that the judgment was announced in favour of the nose, who actually had no use of the spectacle and who actually needs the specs, the eyes, were asked to shut, when it is been worn by someone. If the eyes will remain close, what will be the use of wearing spectacles?
Overall the poem is a fun satirical poem but if the readers read it on a serious note they will understand the depth within.
*Note– For the summary of the poem refer to the critical appreciation of the poetry.
The spelling of the poet is given incorrectly in the appreciation in the poem. I request you to recorrect it as soon as possible.
