THINKING ABOUT THE POEM

i.) Who is the speaker in the poem? Who are the people the speaker meets?
What are they doing?
Answer: The speaker in the poem is a child. The speaker meets a hawker, a gardener and a watchman. The hawker is selling the crystal bangles, the gardener is digging and the watchman is swinging his lantern and walking.
ii.) What wishes does the child in the poem make? Why does the child want
to be a hawker, a gardener, or a watchman? Pick out the lines in each stanza which tell us this.
Answer: The child wishes to be the people he meets every day. He wants to be a hawker so that he could spend day in the road and selling bangles.
I wish I were a hawker, spending my day in the
road, crying, “Bangles, crystal bangles!”
Then the child wants to be a gardener so that he could dig away at the garden and there would not be anybody to stop him from digging.
I wish I were a gardener digging away at the
garden with nobody to stop me from digging.
The child wants to be a watchman so that he could walk the street all night and chase the shadows with his lantern.
I wish I were a watchman walking the street
