V.) Answer the following questions:
1.) Mention two properties of air pressure?
Answer: The properties of air are : 1. Air occupies space, 2. Air has weight and 3. Air exerts pressure
2.) Describe an experiment to prove that air has weight?
Answer:
An experiment to prove that air has weight is :
1.) Take 2 balloons blown with same size and tie this two balloons with stringat the ends of straight stick. Now take string and pin tie at the middle of this straight stick.
2.) Now Hold up the string at the centre. The stick remains horizontal and the balloons are balanced. Now prick one of the balloons with the pin and air will escape. Prick balloon end will go up and the other end will come down.
3.) The balloon filled with air is heavier than the balloon which has no air. This shows that air occupies space and has weight.
3.) Describe an experiment to prove that air exerts pressure?
Answer:
a.) Take a glass tumbler and fill it completely with water. Cover the tumbler with a thick cardboard with your right hand.
b.) Hold the tumbler with the other hand and carefully turn the tumbler upside down. You will see that cardboard does not fall down.
c.) It is because that air exerts an upward pressure on the cardboard and so the cardboard and water do not fall. Thus, from the above experiment, it is clear that air exerts pressure.
4.) State the names of five rare gases in the air?
Answer: Helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon are the five rare gases in the air
5.) Cite some examples which are based on the principle that air exerts pressure?
Answer: examples which are based on the principle that air exerts pressure are :
a.) An injection syringe works with air pressure.
b.) A straw to draw cold drink from a bottle
c.) Fly the kite in the sky
d.) Medicine dropper
e.) ink-filler
6.) How does medicine dropper work?
Answer: The common lift pump helps to draw water up. There are two valves in a lift pump which open only upward and prevent water from going down. The medicine dropper works on the same principle as the Ink-filler.
7.) Name the gadgets in daily use which make use of air pressure?
Answer: straw used for drinking water or juice, Syringe used to take blood from body , ink-filler, medicine dropper.
8.) Give an experiment to show how air pressure helps to push down or lift the liquid up in the straw.
Answer:
a.) Air pressure is used to draw liquids up in straw. One end of the straw is kept in the drink and is sucked through the other end.
b.) Owing to this, some air is removed from the straw tube and the air pressure inside it is reduced.
c.) Now the outside pressure acting on the surface of the drink forces it up into the straw and then into the mouth.
9.) How do you feel the air around you?
Answer: Air cannot be seen but feel around us. For example fluttering the newspaper or any pages , moving tree leaves , flying kite in sky etc which shows the presence of air around us.
10.) State the uses of nitrogen and oxygen?
Answer: Nitrogen is used in preparing fertilizers for crop and also required for the normal growth and development of plants
Oxygen used by living things for breathing and oxygen is essential factor in burning
11.) State the uses of carbon dioxide?
Answer: carbon dioxide is used in prepare the foods of green plants in the presence of sunlight.
12.) State two uses of siphon?
Answer: Used to draw water or liquid from heavy containers like oil transportation, Plumbing and sewage system.
13.) What is air pollution?
Answer: Mixture of poisonous gases and harmful substances into fresh air, making it impure is called air pollution
14.) What are the different causes of air pollution?
Answer: Different causes of air pollution are :
a.) Burning coal, wood, kerosene, petrol, diesel, etc.
b.) Exhaust gases from automobiles.
c.) Smoke from factories.
d.) Smoke Dirt and dust raised by heavy traffic.
e.) Dirt and dust from certain mines.
f.) Decaying animal and plant matter in garbage.
15.) List some ways to control air pollution,
Answer: Ways to control air pollution are :
1.) By using smokeless sources of energy, like solar energy, wind energy etc.
2.) By installing very tall chimneys in the factories.
3.) By growing more trees.

Answer the following questions
1.) What is air and what is essential for humans to breathe?
Answer: Air is the mixture of various gases. These gases include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, hydrogen, helium, neon, etc. Oxygen in the air is essential for humans to breathe. Without air, life would be impossible on the earth.
2.) What is pollutants ? Give examples. How does air gets polluted?
Answer: The material or any substance which cause harmful effect in atmosphere is called pollutants. For example: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, dust, sulphur dioxide. Air gets polluted by smoke, dust and coke emitted by running automobiles and chimneys of factories
3.) How can polluted air be harmful to humans ?
Answer: Polluted air is very harmful to humans for example
a) Redness and irritation of eyes.
b) Chocking sensation in the throat.
c) Difficulty in breathing, bronchitis.
d) Cough
e) Sneezing
f) respiratory diseases and can cause asthma
g) can cause lung diseases
4.) How is Air pollution affecting global warming
Answer: Energy from sun falls on the earth and again radiated back in the atmosphere. The greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, Methane, nitrous oxide etc. traps some of this heat energy that go outside the atmosphere. But increase in Air pollution has increased the gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide etc due to which greenhouse gases have increased and trapping more heat in the earth atmosphere. The climate is getting warm day by day. Thus air pollution is affecting the global warming.
5.) What is CNG ? How can it help in reducing the air pollution?
Answer: Full form of CNG is Compressed Natural Gas. One of reason of air pollution is harmful gases by vehicle emission. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide etc are emitted by the vehicles, the vehicles which runs on petrol or diesel. Using vehicles which runs on CNG can reduce these harmful gases as CNG emits very less quantity of harmful products.
