Answers
Section -A
Q1. True or False: –
i.) True
ii.) True
iii.) True
iv.) False
v.) False
Q2 Choose the correct answer: –
Section -B
Q3. Very Short Answer Type Questions
i.) An axis is an imaginary line on which the earth rotates. The axis joins the north pole and south pole of the earth.
ii.) The Parallels of Latitudes are parallel circles which run from the equator up to the poles. These circles are called Parallel of Latitudes. There are 5 Parallel of Latitudes.
iii.) The 0-degree longitude on the earth’s surface is called the Prime Meridian. It is used to measure the distance between two places in both east and west directions around the earth.
iv.) The three heat zones are Torrid Zone. Temperate Zone and Frigid Zone.
v.) The shape of the earth is slightly flattened at the North and south Poles and it bulges in the middle. This particular shape of the earth is described as a ‘geoid’ or an ‘earth -like shape.
vi.) The total number of latitudes is 180.
Section -C
Q4. Short Answer Type Questions:
i.) The Northern Hemisphere lies in the north of the equator, it extends from the equator to the North Pole. It is known as the Land Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere lies in the south of the equator, it extends from the equator to the South Pole. Tit is also called the Water Hemisphere.
ii.) There are many uses of the globe. It helps in the study of the earth as it looks like a miniature of the earth. It helps in understanding the clear distribution of the land and water on the earth’s surface. It also helps in understanding of the exact size and location of the continents and water bodies on the surface of the earth.
iii.) The areas between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole and areas between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole are called the Frigid Zones. These areas receive slanting rays of the sun and are very cold
Section -D
Q5. Long Answer Type Questions:
i.) Torrid Zone – The zone of the earth’s surface which receives the maximum amount of heat is known as the Torrid zone. The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and thus receives the maximum heat. Frigid Zone – The specific area between the arctic circle to the north pole and the Antarctic Circle to the south pole is called the Frigid Zone. These areas receive slanting rays of the sun and are very cold.
ii.) The equator is very important as it divides the earth into the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere. The equator is important for navigation. This line is at zero-degree latitude, and acts as the reference point when travelers and map-makers work on finding the latitudinal location of any place.
Section -E
Q6. Make the following diagrams: –
i) Important Latitudes
ii) The Grid
