Answer: By extending his power and capturing the other Mahajanapds like Kosala, Matsya, Anga, Kasi Magadha had become a powerful Mahajanapd. Again to expand his power Magadha started taking matrimonial alliance with daughters from other rulers.

Answer: Ganasanghas-
- The rulers were chosen by the people.
- No hereditary ruling system was present over there.
- Raja or King was the head of each assembly.
- For example – Sakyas of Kapilvastu, Mallas of Pava etc.
3.) Explain the administrative system of Magadha rulers.
Answer: Administrative system of Magadha rulers- The King was the head of the entire administrative system and also the head of the army . He used to led the wars. He was like a God infront of the people. He was assisted by different officials Mantris, Sena Nayak, purohita , Gramini etc. Moreover the king had a very powerful and disciplined army along with infantry, cavalry, war elephants and chariots.
4.) What was the socio-economic condition of the people under the Magadha rulers?
Answer: Socio- economic condition under Magadha –
- Social life- Varna system was present in the society and it was based on people’s birth ,not on work. Here Kshatriyas used to hold better position than the Brahmins and Vaishyas or Grihapatis used to do agricultural work, cattle rearing, trading etc. To serve the othe three classes was the duty of the Shudras. Family was an important part of the society and women were paid respect from the society.
- Economic life- Main occupations of the people of Magadha were cattle rearing and agriculture. Crops like wheat, cotton, rice, sugarcane etc .were being cultivated. Bhaga or the land revenue charges like 1/12 or 1/6 th from the total production was also populated. Again people were also engaged in the professions like jewellery making, trading, pottery, carpentry etc. Magadha too had well-developed external and internal trade. They used the coins made by copper and silver
5.) Describe the Varna system. How did it start? What is its present position in India today?
Answer: Varna system -Varna system was present in the society of magadha and it was based on people’s birth, not on work. Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra were the four Varnas. Here Kshatriyas used to hold better position than the Brahmins and Vaishyas or Grihapatis used to do agricultural work, cattle rearing, trading etc. To serve the other three classes was the duty of the Shudras.
It was a social structure and used to believe that should be maintained by birth not by work.
In India this Varna system has turned into caste distinction and social differences based on caste is still there in Indian society.
