Communal Harmony Essay
Communal Harmony Essay : “United we stand, divided we fall” subtly asserts the necessity of having communal harmony. Any dividing forces in society make it fragile. It is the spirit of assimilation and tolerance that has made our civilisation survive against foreign invasions. However, with the passage of time, the increasing attachments to religious, cultural and racial groups have lessened. As a result, there arose a feeling of fear, insecurity and suspicion towards other communities. Moreover, fostering the spirit of brotherhood has turned out to be a challenging task. India’s strong attempt in making a secular polity has been regarded as an important step in fostering communal harmony. Despite, being a secular state India still witnessed communal riots, such as the Bombay Bhiwandi in 1984, the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013 and many more.
Need for communal harmony
Communal harmony is regarded as the fundamental law of creation as it helps in binding people. No human being will ever like living in a state of sheer violence or disharmony. Thus there is always a need to have communal harmony in order to promote the well-being, peace and prosperity of the citizens. Communal harmony means that people of all religions, caste, creed and races develop a feeling of tolerance and awe towards one another. The aim of communal harmony is to promote ethnic coexistence and it shall be deeply rooted in the cultural values of the nation. For instance, Gandhiji, Swami Vivekananda and many other colossal personalities like them believed in the need for promoting communal harmony. Gandhi stated ‘All men are brothers and no human being shall be a stranger to one another.’ One who intends the break the bond of fraternity is regarded as the greatest foe of God. He further stressed that Sarvodaya shall be the aim of all human beings. Furthermore, he vehemently opposed nonviolence and thus he believed that is the bonds of fraternity that will preserve the culture and heritage of the nation.
Swami Vivekananda stated that it is the duty of all to assimilate the spirit of others and keep them embedded in oneself. For the peaceful existence of a diverse country like India, the most essential component that needs to thrive is communal harmony. He further stated that the absence of communal harmony brings a threat to the nation.
The 42nd Amendment Act in the Indian Constitution states secularism, socialism and integrity. The National Integration Council was constituted by the Indian Government in 1992 for strengthening and promoting communal harmony.
Conclusion
To conclude, it can be said that one of the biggest threats to our society is communal violence. Communal acts as a hindrance in the path of the nation to prosper and progress. Despite being a secular nation, India holds a long history of communal violence. The urge of the religious leaders of some Dharm Sansads to assemble arms and kills Muslims substantiates this fact. In addition, Muslims also rioted against the Hindu processions and it is noted at a procession of Ram Navami in Madhya Pradesh. If the communal riots continue in the long run, there are grave doubts as to whether India remains a peaceful nation.
