Answer
1.) Answer the short questions (8×1)
a.) What is malleability property of metals?
Answer – Malleability is one of the properties of metals, this property cause the metals to be beaten into sheets.
b.) Why metals are called sonorous?
Answer – When we strike a metal they produce ringing sound, for this property metals are called sonorous.
c.) What is ductility?
Answer – Ductility is the property by which metals can be drawn into wires.
d.) Which materials are called non-metals?
Answer – The materials which are not sonorous and are poor conductors of electricity are called non-metals.
e.) Red litmus paper turns blue, is it acid or basic?
Answer – It is basic in nature.
f.) What happens when phosphorus when it is exposed to air?
Answer – Phosphorus is a very reactive non-metal. It catches fire when exposed to air.
g.) Which things are produced when metals react with acid?
Answer – Metals produce metal salts and hydrogen gas upon reacting with acid.
h.) What is metalloid?
Answer – Materials which produce characteristics of both metal and non-metals are called metalloid.
2.) Briefly answer the questions (6×3)
a.) Mention the properties of metals.
Answer – Three properties of metals are,
- Ductility – The property by which metals can be drawn into wires.
- Malleability – The property by which metals can be beaten into thin sheets.
- Hard and lustrous.
b.) What happens when oxygen reacts with iron? Explain the process.
Answer – Oxygen reacts with iron to from rusting of iron.
This happens when oxygen comes in contact with water and oxygen. The oxygen reacts with water to form oxide. Which causes the rusting of iron.
c.) How sulphur dioxide is formed?
Answer – At first sulpher powder is heated in a deflagrating spoon or if not available, a metallic cap with a metallic wire wrapped around it can be used.
As soon as the sulpher is burning it is put into a glass jar and the lid is put on so gas cannot escape the jar.
This is how sulpher dioxide is formed.
S + O2 = SO2
d.) How metals react with acid?
Answer – Non-metals doesn’t react with acid but metals react with acid. Metals reacts with acid and forms hydrogen gas and burns with a pop sound.
e.) Mention the uses of metals.
Answer – Metals are used for making different types of things. Such as,
- Machinery
- Automobiles
- Aeroplanes
- Trains
- Satellite
- Gadgets
- Cooking utensils
- Grills and gates
f.) Mention the uses of non-metals.
Answer – Non-metals are very important for our life. Their uses include,
- Oxygen is a non-metal which is essential for our life. All living being inhale oxygen for breathing.
- Some non-metals used in the fields as fertilizers.
- Non-metals are used in antiseptics which help us disinfect wounds.
- They are used in water purification.
