AP 10th Class English Chapter 5C A Tale of Three Villages Solution
1.) Koko Village, Nigeria
I.) Answer the following questions:
1.) Why were the large empty drums placed outside Mr. Nana’s house?
The context of this empty drum comes from the fact that a chemical factory that belongs to Italy had their drums placed nearby which contain poisonous chemicals. it was supposed that these drums were put near the stream that the locals used. hence they could have come there by mistake.
2.) What harm can the pyramid of identical drums cause to the villagers?
since these drums consist of toxic chemicals and their effects or their extent of effect cannot be fully analysed. these drums might have leaks of some sort and when these products are leaked onto the stream whose water the villagers consume will definitely have detrimental effect on their health
3.) Why was the Chief smiling as the lorries drove away?
As the people from the lorries unloaded the drums the chief was handed over a brown paper packet that made him smile. From the scenario it can be assumed it was some sort of incentive.
4.) Was Thomas Agonyo correct in his findings? Justify your opinion.
He was a well educated young man studying in a university in Lagos. He came up with a chemistry book and spent time studying the drum. He did his research before making the conclusion, thus it was natural that he was correct.
5.) Why didn’t the people move from their place?
The people in the villagers could not inhabit the place because they were not well off and couldn’t buy property or land so they couldn’t migrate from one place to another.
6.) There is a repetition of sentences with ‘some’ in the passage.
Read the passage again and write down the sentences and the function of ‘some’ in each one of them. Do you find any other repetitions in the passage? If yes, mention it.
- Some of them are badly corroded, their slimy contents of various colours – grey, dark green, bright orange, etc. – leaking out, down, on to the baked African earth and into the stream.

2.) Ponnimanthuri Village, India
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) The people in this village were affected by chemical factories. Where, in your opinion, should the factories be built?
In my opinion factories especially chemical factories that give away toxic chemical waste should be situated in a place where there isn’t a habitat. also it should not be located in a place that has water bodies and especially with that water body. Is used for other purposes as well. this will ensure that effluence and toxic chemicals from that factory are not released amongst people.
2.) If it is necessary to build factories near the villages, what precautions should be taken to keep the villagers safe?
In case chemical factories are built near villages it should be taken care that before dumping their waste which are basically toxic chemicals they are filtered and cured and not disposed into water bodies or simply onto the land so that other people can get affected from them.
3.) The narrator said at the end, “There is so much they didn’t tell you, I thought”-what was that so much that was not told, according to you?
He wanted to tell that they were unaware of the fact that the chemical industry situated near the village would dump its toxic waste on land and that the women of that village would be infected by it and ultimately develop ulcer and other ugly diseases on their body.
the narrator also expresses his thoughts that there are other demerits of such industries as well. he assumes that if this continues there won’t be any life left in the village anymore because this would lead to loss of life and naturally loss of habitat.
