I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) What made Mrs. Murthy so restless to know her name?
One day while Mrs. Murthy was scrubbing the floor dedicatedly and she questioned herself what was her name. This thought dawned upon her when she saw the house across the road had a name plate that had written on it Mrs. Suhasini ,MA, PhD, principal X college. she realised then that she even had her name just like her neighbour and realised that she was so engrossed in her household chores that she had forgotten her identity.
2.) How did Mrs. Murthy’s husband look upon her desire to know her name?
The husband took her issue very reluctantly and expected that she would be satisfied with whatever name her husband and her children had designated for her. He also thought that being called Mrs Murthy was enough for her identity. Then she questioned him and stressed on the fact that she wanted to know her name. He advised her to go and find it on the certificate as he presumed that she was an educated woman.
3.) Do you notice any change in Mrs.Murthy in the first picture and Sarada in the second picture?
The change in the same character after she gets to know her name is quite evident. In the first scene we meet a housewife who is dedicated to her husband and it’s only appreciated for how good she does her household job and manages it. suddenly she realises that she had almost lost her identity, she was an educated woman with the personality of her own but with time and responsibilities of marriage All of these had faded. When she met her childhood friend Pramila she took her name and that is when she felt relieved and that brought back the memory of her as a student. Sarada would no longer like to be addressed by different names.
4.) Do you find any similarities between Mrs.Murthy and the women in your family? If yes, list them.
In Indian homes that are orthodox and traditional, it is expected that women dedicate themselves to a domestic life rather than paying attention to a professional career. women are mostly confined after marriage As they are expected to perform a lot of functions as a wife, as a daughter-in-law as well as a mother. These roles not only confine the woman but also subdue her personality and freedom to choose the life according to her will. I do find some resemblances of my grandmother with that of Mrs. Murthy. I have always seen that my grandmother since the start of the day was only concerned with household chores and had little time for herself to indulge in her hobbies. She was very good at knitting and sewing, however she could not pursue her passion and she was married early and her in-laws did not support her with her dreams.
5.) Why do you think the writer decided to focus on the question of married women’s identity?
In Indian society when a woman assumes the status of a Married woman it is naturally assumed that she would make a dutiful wife who would make the home a habitable place. the bliss of domestic life list upon the hand of a married woman. In the conquest to make her life peaceful and easier for her family the woman makes unimaginable sacrifices and sometimes suffers from an identity loss. She lives in the shadows of her husband and her in-laws. this subject is highlighted by the writer so that more people are made aware of the situation and plight of married woman
6.) Do you really think a woman can forget her name? What do you think is the intention of the author here?
In case of medical situations it is possible to forget one’s name, other than that we usually remember our names even more because it is always being used to address us. However, if this does not happen and the person is completely engrossed and dedicated to a cause where he /she isn’t bothered about anything else there are chances that he/she might forget the basics of their identity.
The purpose of the author was not to show that Mrs Moorthy had a dull memory, but to emphasise on the fact that she was facing an identity crisis.
7.) Which part of the story shows that Mrs. Murthy feels her identity restored
After meeting her friend Pramila who takes her name the housewife revives her identity. She remembers that she was a brilliant student during her academic years and rediscovers her hobbies. She goes through all the albums and reminisces her memories. when she returns to her husband’s place and he complains about her absence calling her a different name she sternly proposes that he should better call her Sarada which is her name. at this point she refuses to subjugate herself and realises that she is lot more than a mere housewife
