AP 10th Class English Chapter 2B The Dear Departed (Part-II) Solution
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) Justify the view that the husbands of Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan are men with no
Individuality
Both these men and their actions are instructed by their wives who are driven by the greed for their father’s property. Both of them comply with their wise wishes and did not make any remark or even question them, instead they did as their wives asked them to do. In case they had any individuality of character they would have at least protested while they were made to do unjust things
2.) Discuss the irony in the title ‘The Dear Departed’.
The title says dear departed. In the story we get to know that the father of Mrs. Later and Mrs. Jordan has departed. but the irony lies in the word dear. We usually call someone dear when they are related to us or are very close to our heart or is someone who is beloved. it might be naturally assumed that a father is loved by their children. However in this case it is not clear if missus Slater and missus Jordan. Really loved their father. These women were greedy and we’re only after their father’s property and all their mourning was just an eye wash.
3.) List the arguments the two sisters gave to keep their father in their care
Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Slater are not on good terms with each other and both of them wanted to keep their father so that when he departed they could inherit his property. Mrs. Jordan proposed that his father might stay with them since he could provide he would care and comfort, to this Mrs. Slater disagreed .Mrs. Slater also pointed out that Mrs. Jordan had an habit of stealing and it would not be safe for their father to live with her
4.) How does the spat between the old man’s daughters lead to father discovering the truth?
The old man awakens and doesn’t find his Bureau and clock. The sudden revelations during the spat between the two sisters reveal the actual incident and he comes to know that Mrs Slater had put them away ,in the hope and greed that her father had died and she could keep it for herself.
5.) List the comic elements in the play ‘The Dear Departed’.
There are quite a few comic elements in this story such as Mr. Slater’s character herself but also she and her husband removing the Bureau in Greek. also it is fun to see all of their plans of getting their father’s property being spoiled, upon discovering that he was just asleep. The old man talks about marrying at his age which not only shocks the greedy daughters, it also creates a humorous picture.
6.) In what way is the play ‘The Dear Departed’ a commentary on the hollowness of human relationships?
The play depicts the greediness of human nature and how blood relatives such as daughters do not care for the death of a person instead of mourning, discussing property and quarrel so that they can get the most of it. The value of human life is depreciated in this manner and more importance is given to materialistic possession. This is not only unfortunate but also shows the hollowness of human relationships that he himself builds over the years.
7.) What are the three things that the father plans to do on Monday next? What effect does it have on his daughters?
The father expresses his wish that in the coming monday he wants to alter his will, pay the premium for his insurance and get married.
all of this thoroughly shocks the daughters because this would mean that their chances of inheritance is reduced and they would not get what they wanted

The bride’s name is Mrs. John Shorrocks, and I have grown to love and respect her greatly. Initially opposed to my desire to remarry, my daughters have warmed to the idea and are even helping with the preparations.
I am aware that some people would be sceptical of my decision to get married at this point in my life, but I have come to the conclusion that age is just a number and should not stop anyone from finding happiness. I am hoping you will join me in enjoying this special event.

A long time ago, a family named the Patels—a father named Mr. Patel, a mother named Mrs. Patel, and their two daughters, Meera and Kavya—lived in a little village. Mr. Patel’s passing sets the narrative in motion. His long-distance family members get together at his house to pay their respects. It is revealed at the wake that Mr. Patel had been separated from his family as a result of his daughter Meera’s theft of cash and jewellery. Meera resolves to leave the hamlet and move to the closest town so she can start a new life because she feels terrible about what she did.
Kavya, on the other hand, makes the decision to look after her mother and remain in the village. Meera is overcome with sorrow and guilt as she begins her new life because of what she did to her family. She chooses to go back to the village to make peace with her family, but her sister Kavya, who is still enraged at her for robbing their father, opposes her plans. Meera eventually succeeds in making apologies with her family and reconciling with her sister in spite of the initial reluctance. She makes the choice to remain in the community and assist her sick mother. The sisters create a new life for themselves while also caring for their mother.
The family moves on with their lives at the conclusion of the story, having accepted their loss. They cherish and remember Mr. Patel with gratitude for the time they shared with him. The novel is set in typical Indian villages and cities, and the characters wear traditional Indian clothing like sarees and kurtas throughout. The items that Meera took have been replaced with cash and ornate Indian jewellery.
