Domestic Career :
He played at Barnards Green Cricket Club in Worcestershire, England, in order to help them secure promotion from Worcestershire Cricket League into Birmingham League Cricket. On 21 September 2013, he became the first bowler in T20 cricket to take 4 wickets in succession in a match against India A.
International Career :
In November 2010, against Sri Lanka Russell made his Test debut and it is the only Test match of his career. In the 2011 Cricket World Cup, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Ireland at Mohali. Then his mark in the ODI series against India. After coming to the crease at 96/7 in his 3rd ODI, he scored 92 not out of 64 deliveries. He was named as the Player Of The Match in the 5th ODI against India at Sabina Park in Kingston.
For the 2016 T20 World Cup, he was named the ‘Team of the Tournament by the ICC, Cricinfo, and Cricbuzz. For the 2019 Cricket World Cup, he was named to the West Indies squad in April 2019. In a match against Australia, he became the Quickest batsman to score 1000 runs off 767 balls in ODIs. Unfortunately, due to a knee injury, he was ruled out of the rest of the tournament, and as a replacement, Sunil Ambris was appointed.
He scored his maiden T20I fifty on 9 July 2021 during the first T20I against Australia. In the match, he scored 51 runs off 28 deliveries. For the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup he was named to the West Indies squad in September 2021.

Russell was bought by the Delhi Daredevils in the 2012 Indian Premier League auction for a sum of $ 450,000. - For a whereabouts clause violation by an independent anti-doping panel in Kingston, Russell was banned from cricket for a duration of a year, i.e. From 31 January 2017 to 30 January 2018. The immediate impact was that he was restricted from playing in the Pakistan Super League and IPL in February and April 2017 respectively.
