A visit to a zoo offers an amazing experience to explore the wilderness of earth. It is not possible for everyone to visit jungles or get an opportunity to see wild animals from very close in their natural habitat. A zoo is mostly constructed as a replica of the natural habitat of the wild animals where it is possible to watch all types of birds and animals in one place. The report aims to pen down the observations made during the visit emphasizing on the importance of the zoos, their impact on education and appreciation of wildlife.
On last Sunday,7th January, a visit to the Alipore Zoo, Kolkata was organised by the residents of the Ashirwad Housing Society. On entering the premises of the zoo, a sense of excitement and expectation engulfed all of us. The lush green surroundings, beautiful brick pathways lying in front of us were setting the stage for the upcoming adventure. The soft crackling sound of the leaves, the distant noise of the animals engulfed us.
The first stop in the zoo was the bird sanctuary, a refuge to the varieties of colourful winged animals who were delight to our eyes. The variety extended from solemn eagles, the vibrantly coloured parrots. The hornbills, pheasants, flightless birds like emu and ostrich were a sight for eyes. After observing the exquisite pattern of flying techniques of these birds and their capabilities of adapting to their surrounding environment, all of us were mesmerized.
Moving forward we reached around the enclosures of the big cats. The majestic lions and tigers hypnotised us. The spacious and thoughtfully constructed enclosure were the replica of their natural environment which gave the impression of the commitment towards these wild animals. The sight of the Royal Bengal tiger, the White tiger appreciate the robustness of these felines.
The primates section with the robust apes, baboon, chimpanzee, gorilla, monkeys, lemurswere equally interesting and reminded us of their similarities with humans and are the closest relatives of human amongst all the animal kingdom. Their similarities with humans remind us of our history of evolution.
The visit to the house of the reptiles revealed a world of slithering snakes, gigantic yellow anacondas, golden tree snake, Indian rock python, cobra, intricate lizards and primitive turtles. We experienced the exquisite biodiversity within the animal world which reminded us the vividness and richness of our nature.
Throughout the zoo, the presence of the informative signs and knowledgeable staff increased our inquisitiveness and we were benefitted with the knowledge and information about the habitat, food habits of the various species residing in the zoo.
After visit to the zoo, I was deeply touched by the beauty and diversity of the nature. It was not only recreational hub for me but also a crucial place for education The need for conservation and keeping the delicate balance intact became clearer. I understood the interdependence of all living beings and urgent need for the preservation.
