As we live in three dimensions been scientifically correct four dimensions (forth will be time) It is quite easy for us to see or observe many different 3d shape around use getting used in our day to day life.
Sometimes there emerges a curiosity for the information about the dimension and we quickly starts to search for it. In this article we are going to take a look to these 3d shapes only and also going to have a brief overview of them with diagrams.
Name of shape |
Description |
Sphere | A perfect round and symmetrical shape where each of its points are equidistance from centre. As one can observe it does not have any edge and vertices. Example football etc. |
Cube | It a shape that is formed by combining 6 squares together and as one can see in image it has 12 vertices and 8 edges. Example of cube that can be seen in real life is dice. |
Cylinder | It is a pipe like structure where two circles are connected together and one can observe in diagram it does not have vertices but have 3 faces and 2 edges. Real life examples are gas cylinders. |
Cone | Cone is a interesting 3d shape as we can see it have one face, one edge and one vertices. It has a circular base connected to the pointed top and real life example can be ice cream cone. |
Cuboids | Cuboids are just like cube they have 8 edges and 12 vertices. The only difference is that instead of square we use 6 rectangles to form cuboids. Real life example can be a brick. |
Pyramid | Pyramids are also an interesting 3d shape as it has a square base with triangles as side joining together. It is a kind of polyhedron as it have polygon as a base. Real life example of pyramid will be pyramid of Giza. |
Ellipsoid | An ellipsoid is a three-dimensional shape that resembles a stretched or compressed sphere. It has an ellipsoidal or oval shape. Ellipsoids are found in nature, such as planets and some fruits. They are characterized by three semi-axes of different lengths. |
Dodecahedron | A dodecahedron is a polyhedron with twelve regular pentagonal faces, thirty edges, and twenty vertices. It is one of the five Platonic solids and is known for its complexity and aesthetic appeal. Dodecahedra have symbolic significance in various cultural and mystical contexts. |
If one believes that 3d shapes only a part of geometry than the person is completely wrong. If we observe around us we are surrounded by such things and hence studying and remembering 3d shape is one important skill that everyone should have.
