We all have grown up hearing this proverb- unity is strength and this used to constitute a part of our moral science class in primary schools. We have also heard united we stand, divided we fall. This also implies that we can stand in solidarity because of strength. The proverb is simple yet it has a profound deep meaning that helps in shaping human personality. However, in today’s world of cut-throat-competition, we cannot make the best use of the concept- unity is strength. The proverb originated in the Dutch Republic and later on it was adopted by the armed forces of Bulgaria, Greece, the Republic of Africa, United States and Netherlands. There is a moral story where the essence of the proverb was taught to us in our childhood days. As regards the story, a farmer had four sons who fought among themselves. In order to teach them, the importance of unity the farmer gave each one of them a bundle of sticks which they failed to break on their own. Thus, they understood that if they stay united instead of fighting, they can surmount many challenges together.
Merits:
The proverb-Unity is strength applies to the familial relationships. It is important for all the family members to stay together in unison, have faith in one another and share emotions. This bond is found in joint families, where one member stands by the side of every other member. They share happiness and sadness together. Unity develops trust, cooperation, patience, care, affection, perseverance in human beings. It is very important to have a strong relationship between parents and offspring, siblings, husband and wife. Besidesthis, it is also important to have cordialrelations with neighbors who also helps us in times need. They participate together in festivals and social gatherings. Children who grow up in nuclear families can enjoy being in the company of neighbors. Indians were able to oust British from India because they unitedly fought against the British rule with indomitable spirit. Thus, by doing so India got independent in the year 1947. Working in unity in offices brings about success in the task assigned. In schools, students should be taught to work in unity. This spirit can be fostered among them by assigning them projects or encouraging them to participate in events like annual programme, sports, Republic Day, Independence Day, Christmas, etc.
Problems faced in absence of unity:
People nowadays have become self-centric. They enjoy their own company and do not want to stay in unity. They love to have privacy in their own lives instead of outside interference. Another reason of avoiding unity is mistrust. Lack of trust breaks unity as a result of which people love being alone. The number of divorces in the recent past have increased due to lack of unity between husband and wife. Joint families are fragmented into nuclear families because of mistrust. Students end up quarrelling because of jealousy and mistrust. Nations participate in fights again owing to mistrust developed towards the other. Relation between colleagues suffer because of mistrust. Due to lack of unity, the bond between human beings weakens and they end up being lonely creatures.

It is lucidly evident that strength lies in unity. Lack of unity weaken human bonds. Several instances, incidents and anecdotes reflect the notion of strength in unity. Therefore, it is crucial for all of us to avoid fights with one another and stay in unison. It will strengthen our bond and ensure safety to us. Our relationships will grow from time to time and will go beyond eternity- that’s the true essence of strength in unity.
