Tenali Rama: The Man Who Never Lied
The royal court was always bustling with activity. The affairs of the court were going smoothly. Suddenly, King Krishna deva Raya called Tenali Rama and said, “In our kingdom, the people always speak the truth. No one ever tells a lie.” Tenali Rama did not agree with the king. He replied, ” I don’t agree with you. People speak the truth only when it benefits them or when it is necessary for their work.” The king denied and said, “No, I have never spoken a lie. I challenge you to prove me wrong.” Tenali Rama then said, “Man lies according to circumstances.” So, the king told Tenali Rama to catch him speaking a lie. Tenaliram nodded his head and went home.
Days pass, and the courtiers and the king forget about the matter completely. One day the king heard the news that one saintly man was showing a vision of God with the magic water he had. The king immediately took the queen and went to meet the saint. The saint told the king that only those who have never committed any sins can see the vision of God. The king inquired about the people who went to see the vision of god. Everyone saw their own reflection in the water. But because of fear, everyone said that they have seen God. The queen also saw her own reflection but told everyone that she also saw God. When the king looked into the water, he saw his own reflection. But because of the belief that others saw God and I did not, even the king told everyone that he saw God. Then Tenali Rama said to the king, “How can you see God? It is just plain water. I was the one who told that saint to perform this drama. Look, you have also lied under the circumstances.” The king agreed with what Tenali Ram said and the king apologized to Tenali Ram for lying.”
The Clever Son of Tenali Rama
One day, Tenali Rama’s son was insisting on going with him to the court. Rama and his wife tried to convince him, but he did not listen. Finally Rama took him to the court and told him to wait under a tree in the royal garden. Tenali Rama also warned him not to harm the garden and Tenali left for the king’s court.
Tenali Rama’s son sat quietly for a while but he started getting bored. He started walking all over the garden. He saw a mango tree, hit the mango with a stone and ate it. He liked mango. He dropped two or three more mangoes and that time one of the stones hitted a soldier. A soldier caught him and took him to the king. Just then, Tenali Rama came and asked the reason for arresting his son. The soldiers told him everything that had happened. Rama did not want his son to be punished. He put his cloth on the son’s head and told the soldiers that he was wearing it to protect him from the heat. Even the child understood why the father put the cap on his head. He ate two mangoes on the way to the court. A soldier did not understand anything because he was wearing a mask on his head.
The soldiers went to the court and told the king that they caught Tenali Ram’s son stealing mangoes. The king looked at the boy and asked where the mangoes were. Then Rama’s son said that he didn’t have any mangoes with him and that the soldier did this to get a false impression on his father. The king then warned the soldier not to do this again and sended Rama’s son home with a box of mangoes.
