Answer: The description of the blue planet is correct for the earth. It is said to be a blue planet because most of the surface is covered with water and therefore takes on a blue colour. 71% area of the earth’s surface is covered with water. Earth is the fifth largest planet in the solar system and the third in relation to the sun’s distance. Earth is the only planet that sustains life at human cost. The ocean is the main body of water that makes planet Earth blue.
Many human activities have a negative effect on oceans, aquatic rocks and ice glaciers. One of those activities that have the greatest impact on the ocean is global warming. Global warming is increasing by increasing human activity. It is caused by the climatic changes occurring on the earth. The average temperature of the earth is increased by global warming. The greenhouse effect is the absorption and emission of infrared radiation and CFCs from gases emitted by humans on the planet. The atmosphere is polluted and these gases are trapped in the ozone layer which will increase the temperature of the Earth by depleting the ozone layer. Ozone layer is the layer that protects the earth from the harmful rays of the sun. As the earth’s temperature rises, the ice glaciers in the Arctic region and the Antarctic region begin to melt and raise the sea level, which is harmful to the land. In this way, human activity has a detrimental effect on the oceans and the land.
4.) Why are there differences in the salinity of oceans?
Answer: Evaporation of seawater and formation of floe ice increases the salinity of the ocean. Following factors also contributes into salinity of oceans.
i) Evaporation and precipitation.
ii) In coastal areas, by the flow of fresh water from rivers and in Polar Regions, by the process of freezing and thawing of ice.
iii) Wines by transferring water to other areas.
