1) Describe any disaster that occurred in your area or that you watched on T.V.? What measures could have been taken to reduce its impact.
Answer –
Recently there was heavy rain in my areas which causes the river water to flood into the village and destroy the houses even the agricultural crops were destroyed. Many cattle also drowned in the water.
The measures to reduce the impact are:
- The Govt. should provide with better flood warning system.
- The people in the danger zone should be sent to elevated areas.
- The Govt. should provide disaster management lessons to make the people more prepared.
- Donors should be encouraged to supply them food and clothing.
- Medical facilities should be arranged.
2) How could the disaster be prevented/managed?
Answer
Disaster can be prevented only when we get right information that any kind of disaster is coming and also if we take care of our planet by growing trees & by not polluting our environment. Under are some ways :
- If your house is securely built on high ground take shelter in the safe part of the house. However, if asked to evacuate do not hesitate to leave the place and move to a designated safe centre with the safety emergency kit.
- Have disaster supplies ready at hand. These should include medicines, food, torch, rope and etc.
- Keep listening to battery operated radio for news on the disaster information because most likely the electricity will go off.
- Discuss natural disaster with your family & Plan evacuation routes from your home if any such disaster occurs.
- Village disaster management teams should be formulated and trained.
- Safety shelter should be constructed in strategic locations so as to accommodate villagers in case of any disaster in the area.
3) Discuss experiences of your elders with regard to the disasters and the management and write a note.
Answer
My grandparents were in the field when suddenly the ground under their feet started shaking there was Earthquake of magnitude of 6.8 which is very high and which destroyed the mud houses build by my great grandparents and of several villagers. The electricity went out for several days leaving the village in darkness and with no roof over and all their food inside the house destroyed. The people of the locality build a shelter because they feared for another earthquake to come and gather whatever food everyone had left and cooked and shared the food with everyone of the village. The electricity returned after a month but the communication lines took some more time. Food was rationed with neighbours helping out each other as the stock in the locality shops was damaged. Preference was given to children, and the elders and everybody tried their outmost to make the locality functional and liveable again.
4) Suggest the precautions to be taken by the people to face the disasters.
Answer
The precautions are –
- Always listen to the radio and be updated.
- Don’t panic always be prepared and be patient.
- Find out if your home is in the locations of disaster areas if so move out of it and go to more secured area.
- Big trees surrounding should be cut down
- Always keep a bag packed with essentials for your family which include medicines, food, safety kits.
- Keep listening to battery operated radio for news on the disaster information because most likely the electricity will go off.
- Plan evacuation routes from your home if any such disaster occurs.
5) Mention the effects of drought.
Answer
The effects of drought are:
- Decrease in the amount of drinkable water
- Crops in the area become less productive as they need water for good yielding.
- If water is less agricultural will be a loss and farmers can’t produce enough crop for revenue to cover cost.
- No water will kill the surrounding life forms.
- No water will affect the physical health of the children in the place.
- Human will be prone to diseases and will die.
6) Mention the occasions where the water is wasted and suggest the preventive measures.
Answer :-
The occasions where the water is wasted are
- Children waste too much water at home (while playing).
- Water is wasted in modern water parks.
- Huge amount of water is wasted in Marriage functions.
- Water are wasted by hourly taps in which water cannot be stopped.
- We can see water being wasted while carrying water in tanks.
- Water are mostly wasted on household works cleaning, bathing, washing , etc.
- Water are wasted from swimming pools of big hotels.
Some prevention are:
- People should be educated about the shortage of water and how to utilize water better.
- Need advertisement in the news for saving water to make people more aware.
- Municipal should tract the amount of water used by households and warn people who use large amount of water.
- Student in the school should be taught not to waste water.
- Rain water should be saved in order to increase the amount of water.
- People should avoid wasting water by bathing , washing cloth every day.
