Comprehension
Answer the following questions.
1.) What are the major characters in the play?
Answer:-The old giant , the giant and the children like tall girl , short boy, Square girl , graceful girl, round boy. The snow and frost, North wind and Autumn are major characters in the play
2.) Why do you think children have been named as ‘tall girl’, ‘round boy’, ‘square girl’ etc.?
Answer:- There are many children in the play so just to simplify the identity of each child they are name as ‘tall girl’, ‘round boy’, ‘square girl’ etc. Also it is helpful in imaginary point of view.
3.) How can you say that The Giant is selfish?
Answer:- The Giant is selfish as he did not allow anyone in his garden. Specifically he didn’t allow children’s to play in his garden and also built the high walls around the garden so that they cannot enter in.
4.) Who were with the Giant? What did their names suggest?
Answer:- The snow and frost, North wind and Hail were with the Giant. The names suggest that there was the winter season.
Reading B: The Selfish Giant II
Comprehension
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) How is the ‘child’ different from the other children?
Answer :-The was so small that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly.The child could not play like other children and got injured his hands and knees. The child asked old Giant that can he play in his garden he shall later take old giant to the paradise and The Child climbs into the Old Giant’s arms.
2.) How does the narrator explain the idea of spring time? Pick out some expressions.
Answer:-The narrator explains the idea of spring time personal bond he is sharing with the nature. Some beautiful expressions mentioned by narrator are
- The Hail has stopped dancing
- the North Wind has ceased his roaring
- The trees were so glad
- The birds were flying
- Trees had covered themselves with blossoms
- Trees were waving their arms gently above the children’s heads
- The flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing

Answer:-No doubt, Nature is one the precious gift of God to humans. It should be preserved and protect it.
The central theme of the play is one should not to selfish, instead should enjoy the equally with all the love blessings of nature. Enjoy the fruit of nature with all.
Earlier when Giant didn’t allowed any child to play in his garden, his garden was filled with the snow and frost, North wind and hailed all the time.
But later when children started playing in the garden and touched it , The Hail has stopped dancing and the North Wind has ceased his roaring. Treeshad covered themselves with blossoms, and were waving their arms gently above the children’s heads. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene

In the above two sentences you notice that verbs are used with ‘-ing’. Do you notice any difference between them?
In the first sentence the verb + ing is preceded by is. The verb is in progressive form.
In the second sentence you don’t find is, are, was or were before verb + ing. Such verbs with ‘-ing’ and without helping verbs are known as ‘Gerunds’. They are normally in the subject position or object position.

SarasBaug
This summer vacation I had visited Sarasbaug,which is famous spot in pune city. In early days the place had a Lake but as time passed lake dried up and then this land was converted into the park. It has Ganpati temple situated on hillock.
The park to too big, I guess it is almost 25 acres. I found it very relaxing and peaceful to see greenery and silence.. I saw different tree and birds over. I took photos of the beautiful nature.

Answer:- The central idea of the poem is to portray the beauty of nature and inner side of humans. The Garden that everyone has in their heart that is the emotions feelings. Talks about the smile which are like petals. As petals are beauty of flower the same way smile is beauty of human being. The nutritious hope, that is a plant needs nutritious soil to grow healthy so the same way human being hopes strengthen the inner being.Poem shows that poet shows gratitude towards the god for giving him the hope to live and put a smile on his face.
2.) What features of the garden in the poet’s heart are mentioned in stanza 1?
Answer:- The features of the garden in the poet’s heart that are mentioned are the smiling petals of flowers which compared to human smile. The nutritious hope that is nutritious soil required for reap seeds compared to the hopes humans require to stay happy strengthen and pass hopes to others.

Simile, Metaphor and Personification
Observe the following sentences.
1.) Here and there over the grass stood beautiful c. thankful flowers like stars. In this sentence flowers are compared to stars. Such a comparison using ‘like’ and ‘as’ is called a ‘simile’.

2.) Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride.
In the above sentence the word ‘journey’ is used to describe/compare the word ‘life’. Such words are called ‘metaphors’. They are used to show that the two things have the same qualities. They make the description more powerful.

3.) Spring has forgotten his garden.
Here, though ‘spring’ is a season, it is represented as a human being and given the qualities of forgetting etc. Such usage in literature is called ‘personification’.

A Garden of Qualities : The poem ‘The Garden Within’ talks about our spirit and goals. Our qualities are an important part of who we are. All of us, girls and boys, men and women, have all human qualities. Some are better developed than others. Here is a list of few qualities. Circle the ones you think are more developed in you.
