Telanagana State Board Class 7 Science Chapter 13 Seed Dispersal Solution:
Q1. What happens if seeds are not dispersed?
Ans. Seed dispersal is necessary to grow tiny plants of the same species. To avoid competition with the mother plant for air, water, and minerals plants disperse their seeds to different distances. And plants have special mechanism for seed dispersal. It means to groe new plants. Seeds dispersal are very important. So seed dispersal is essential for survival of plants.
Or
If seeds are not dispersed all seeds will fall under the parent plant and fight for water, minerals, sunlight. So they will not develop into healthy plants and many of them may even die. So seed dispersal is very important for a plant to grow.
Q2. How are the seeds dispersed in caltropis?
Ans. Caltropis reproduces using seeds, there are many ways they can dispersed. These seeds have light and hairy structure.
These seeds travel with wind, some of them are float in air. They can also disperse through water, attach with the vehicles and animals. In this process the seeds are separated from the parent plant with the help of these given methods that is wind, water, plants and animals.
Q3. Why do most of the coconut trees grow along the sea shores?
Ans. The seeds adapted to float on water are usually light. Mainly coconut trees lean towards the sea. So their seeds can fall into the sea easily. Coconuts fruits are able to floats on water and moves from one place to another and it reaches the ground it germinates. Thats why we usually find coconut trees growing near sea shores.
Q4. Do you find any relationship between the weight of the seeds and the dispersal mechanism? Discuss with suitable examples.
Ans. Yes, the dispersal mechanism depends upon the weight of the seeds. That means there is a relationship between them. For example light weight seeds can easily be dispersed by wind or air. But heavy seeds can only be dispersed by water or by animals.
Q5. Ravali said “dispersal of seed is very important in nature” Is she correct? Why do you support her?
Ans. Ravali is correct by saying that the dispersal of seeds is very important in nature. Because
i) Seed dispersal is essential for survival of plants.
ii) If seeds are not dispersed all the seeds fall in the same place and germinate producing plants of same species.
iii) To avoid competition with the mother plant for air, water and minerals plants disperse their seeds to different distances.
iv) As all seeds do not get sufficient sunlight and water, they can’t survive.
So, we can say, seed dispersal is very important in nature to get variety of plants at different places.
Q6. Collect the information in the following table and discuss the reasons?
Ans.
Agents of dispersal | Name of the seed / Fruit |
By wind | Milkweed, Dandelion, Maple |
By water | Coconut seed, Lotus seeds |
By animal | Fleshy fruits seeds (Berry) |
By bird | Neem fruit seeds |
By man | Tomato, guava, pear, cauliflower, suger cane |
By any other | Wheat pulses, maize, paddy seeds are travel by aeroplanes |
Reasons for dispersal:
By wind:- These seeds have light and hairy structure or very small. Some of them have wings and thats why these seeds get adapted in such a way that they carried away easily by wind.
By water:- Seeds that are heavy usually fall the bottom of water sources and get carried by the flow of water. Some of seeds adapted to float on water as they are light usually. The outer covering of these seed has empty spaces filled with air. So they can easily float on water.
By animals: Seed are dispersed by animals in many ways, some fruits are eaten by animals while some dry fruits get struck to the bodies of animals and get carried to distant places. Some seeds get dispersed through animal excretions.
By birds: Some seeds are sticky and get struck to the beaks of birds and when they lies, seeds are fall down at distant places. Some birds also carry seeds with their beaks. Some fruits outer fleshly part get digested in the good canel and the seed coats of them become tender. Then they are dispersed to other places as birds droppings.
By man:- Generally people saw seedsof flowers, fruits and vegetables in their home garden. Man sow the seeds of vegetables like tomato, cauliflower, guava, pear, on their gardens. Sugar cane is good example of trans fer seeds / fruits by people from one place to another.
By any other:- Import and export of grains like wheat pulses, maize, paddy is a common practice through which many seeds get dispersed all over the world. These seeds also travel by aeroplanes and ships.
Q7. Some seeds like soap nuts have very hard shell. Why it is so?
Ans. Some seeds like soap nuts have very hard shell because to protect it from many environment conditions. When these seeds are present in a unfavorable condition, the shells groe harder to protect them from such situation.
Q8. Now- a-days people want to eat sprouts. List out the reasons why they take sprouts as food?
Ans. They take sprouts as food because there are many reasons. Sprouts is very healthy.
Its also nutritional food as it contains a lot of protein.
The protein in sprouts are easier to digest, so eating sprouts can improve our digestion.
Sprouts also help in human body to level of our blood sugar and also protect us from heart diseases.
