Telangana SCERT Solution Class VI (6) Social Studies Chapter 12 Democratic Government.
( 1 ) Discuss the similarities and differences between the governments in a Gond tribe and a modern democracy .
In Gond tribe , the governing mechanism of the tribal society usually involves the male members of the family who participates in the process of decision making and a significant role is played by the headmen with an aim of implementing these decisions. This type of governing system functions well in those type of situations in which there are less number of people. Furthermore , they also depicted similarities on the grounds of interest, aspirations and their way of living. They also did not have any kind of class distinctions on the basis of rich and poor. Therefore, these are the following reasons which contributed in the effective functioning of the tribal arrangement. On the other hand , the present day ruling system depicts a form of government which is democratic in nature. In this form of government, the power of people is given immense importance, where people possesses the right to choose their leader . Simultaneously, if the leader fails to comply with the wishes of the people, then they also have the right to change them. Here, the leader is not selected on the basis of their hereditary status but rather they are selected on the grounds of elections.
( 2 ) Is it possible to include the opinions of the minority in taking a decision? Discuss with some examples.
It is possible to incorporate the opinions of the minority while taking any kind of decisions but the opinions of the majority is always given the ultimate importance. As for instance, the one who acquires maximum number of votes will win the election, even if there lies a difference of only one vote. For example, if a village panchayat is comprised of twenty members and just eleven members stands in support of a proposal, then it will lead to the implementation of the proposal , even if nine members are not in favor of it or stands against it. Though, the opinions of the majority are considered as ultimate butthe opinions of the minority are also included in the sphere of decision making process.
( 3 ) Imagine how your school would be if it was run by all the students and teachers together? Would you want everyone to participate in taking decisions or would you like to elect representatives ? Give reasons.
If all the students and the teachers gets an opportunity to run the school in a collective manner then it would contribute in smooth functioning of the educational institution, as it would be convenient for them to handle the situation effectively . If the task can be distributed among the student bodies then it can help the teachers to get rid of the excessive burden. Furthermore, the interest of the students will be given due importance . I always prefer democratic form of decision making where everyone will get an equal chance to express their viewpoint as everyone has their own personal choice in the sphere of decision making.
4 ) Do you think the decision making in your house is democratic? Does everyone have a say in it ?
The decision making process in our family is absolutely democratic , where every members of the family have an equal say in it. In our family, everyone’s opinion is given due importance and the decision is considered final only after a detailed discussion with our family members. Here, each individual’s opinion is taken into consideration ,as they enjoy an absolute freedom to deliver their thoughts and perspectives. If any one of them feels that it is not the correct decision, then they can rise up against it as everyone possesses their individual right to express their viewpoint . So, in this way decisions are taken in our family.
( 5 ) Gopal’s father consulted all the members of the family on setting up a shop but everyone had a different opinion. Finally, he decided to set up the shop. Do you think he was democratic?
The decision taken by Gopal’s father could not be considered as democratic because everyone held distinct perspective regarding the shop opening. But, he ignored the opinions of other people and considered his decisions to be the ultimate. For this reason, his decisions cannot be categorized as democratic. In democratic form of government, a decision is taken only after a detailed discussion and consultation . This kind of decision making mechanisms helps in preventing any kind of rash decisions. As a result of which, the quality of decision making is also improved to a considerable extent.
( 6 ) Mary’ s mother asked her children where they wanted to go on Sunday. Two children wanted to watch a film and three wanted to go to the park. If you were in Mary’s mother ‘s place, what decision would you take? Give reasons.
If I would have been in Mary’s mother’s place , then I would have supported the decision of the three children who wanted to go to the park. I would have taken this decision because in order to promote the activities of the children, the park acts as a quite better option. It also contributes in enhancing the recreational activities . The open spaces in the parks helps in ameliorating not only the psychological health but also the physical health of the children. Owing to these reasons, I would have taken the decision to go to the park instead of going to the theatre.
