The Trial
I.) Answer the following questions.
Joan said, “If you leave the door of the cage open, the bird will fly out.” Why did D’
Estivet say that it was a confession?
Answer: When D’Estivet questioned Joan if she had tried to escape from the prison, on which Joan admitted and further said that ,If you leave the door of the cage open, the bird will fly out. This was taken as a confession by D’Estivet.
2.) Why did Joan say, “I will swear no more?”
Answer: Joan said that she had already told the whole truth and God didn’t allow her to tell the complete truth. She told that it was an old saying that anyone who tells too much truth is sure to be hanged. She was tired of the argument as she had already sworn for nine times and was not ready to swear once again.
3.) Who are the people who tried to save Joan in the trial? How do you know it?
Answer: The Inquisitor, Ladvenu are the people who tried to save Joan in the trail. The inquisitor is the man who asks about her health and could take D’Estivet and counselors harsh remarks made on her. It was Ladvenu who asked to take things mercifully and he was also the one who didn’t like torturing her for mere pleasure.
4.) Joan expressed her helplessness to tell the whole truth. Why? What was the old saying she mentioned in this context?
Answer: Joan was tired of telling the truth. She told that she cannot tell the truth as God didn’t allow the whole truth to be told. She mentioned an old saying that said that he who tells too much truth is sure to be hanged. She had sworn for nine times and was tired to repeat it once again.
5.) Why was the doctor forbidden to bleed Joan?
Answer: The doctor was forbidden to bleed Joan because the doctor believed that a witch’s witchery leaves her if she is bled.
6.) Courcelles said that Joan should be tortured. What reasons did he give to support his argument?
Answer: The argument made Joan tired. She was tired of telling the truth and had already sworn for nine times and was not ready to swear for the next time. This act of her made courcellers angry and he felt that there was need to torture Joan.
7.) Why did Joan regret having worn the surcoat?
Answer: Joan worn cloth of gold surcoat in the battle and it was because of it she was pulled backwards off her horse by Burgundian soldier. That is why she regretted having worn the surcoat.

Answer: Courcellers called Joan with names like heretic, shepherd lass.

Joan is a young girl. She is a French farmer girl. She claims that she is blessed by the God and could hear voice of saints. She has a great concern for the women. She is not just naïve girl but she is courageous and believed that women too are capable of doing things other than household chores. She is a confident and brave girl. She is straightforward in her talks and attitude. She answers every question with confidence and her argument makes everyone quiet. She is not afraid of anyone. She has deep devotion toward the god. She has deep knowledge of gospel. She is someone who is witty and has practical approach. The most important trait of personality is that she is firm in her approach and is not moved by anyone’s accusation. It was because of her that brought the confidence of siege of Orleans and took back the city of Reins. She is a true patriotic and rather than to be in the hands of Englishmen she prefers to be in the church. She is not scared of anyone and is outspoken.
