The historical evidence of Bathukamma is associated with the Chola king Paraantaka Sundara Chola, who turned to Lord Rajarajeshwara in Vemulawada for help during an attack by the Raashtrakoota kings. He built a temple for the huge Shivalinga in Vemulawada, which bears similarities to the Brihadeshwara Temple in Tanjavuru. The festival of Bathukamma is said to have originated when Lord Rajarajeshwara left the kingdom in the form of a Linga and was consoled by Parvathi, symbolized by the Bathukamma made with flowers.
