Deepa : Yes! You’re right. I completed my schooling from Calcutta and went to Ajmer for graduation.

Deepa : Yes,but at five I suffered with a spinal tumour. At six I underwent three spinal operations that resulted in almost 200 stitches. Shockingly, I was left paralyzed below the waist since then.
Bikram : How did you feel when you were honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2012?
Deepa : (Eyes wide open, Felt proud)It was a surprise for me. I was 42 then, the oldest Arjuna awardee to be active in sport. However, I was also conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2017 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2019.
Bikram : How are your family helpful to you?
Deepa : They are very helpful. With the undying love and support from my husband as well as my family, I waded through all the hurdles.
Bikram : Did you also receive the “Swawlamban Award” by the Maharashtra government?
Deepa : (Laughed loud)Yes, you are right! For my independence. I had a successful catering business.
Bikram: Any message from you for upcoming generations?
Deepa: My message is “Take initiative and stop living on excuses. If you have a passion and if you have a dream, then you should have the courage to fulfil the dream.
