1.) Sit in groups and discuss the following questions:
a.) Why did many neighbours come to Raja’s house?
Ans. So many neighbours came to Raja’s house because the news that he was missing apread and they were concerned.
b.) What did the neighbours talk about Raja?
Ans. The neighbours talked with Grandmother, who told everyone that Raja was a very good boy. They all were so worried that they were crying thinking that Raja was dead.
c.) Why did Raja hide? Has this ever happened to you too? Share your answer with your friends.
Ans. After shaking the sandalwood tree and drenching Raja and Grandfather, Grandfather became very angry. Because of this, Raja hid, to save himself from his Grandfather’s beating.
Such an incident has never happened to me. If it were to happen to me, I would hide too.
d.) Do you think Raja did the right thing by hiding? Explain why.
Ans. Although Raja did not do a completely right thing by hiding, since he is a child, hiding must have been his natural reaction. Since his Grandfather was very strict on him and also said that he would beat him,Raja got scared. That is why he hid himself from a beating. So, from the point of view of a child, Raja’s actions were justified.
2.) Let’s think
a.) Think of the ending of the story. Did grandfather beat Raja or didn’t he? Why do you think so? Share with your teacher and classmates.
Ans. I think that Grandfather must not have beaten Raja at the end of the story. This is because, towards the end even Grandfather had become regretful of his strictness with Raja and just wanted his grandson back. Also, Grandmother had gotten angry at Grandfather and told him that Raja’s disappearance was caused as a result of Grandfather telling Raja that he will beat him. Due to this, Grandfather must have been very upset, and instead of wanting to beat Raja for his childish tricks, he would have forgiven him and taken relief in the fact that his grandson was back safe and sound.

3.) Let’s write
a.) Write down the answers to the following questions in your notebook.
i.) What rules did grandfather make for Raja? Do you think he was fair? Give reasons.
Ans. Raja’s Grandfather was a very strict person. He made various rules for Raja to follow. One of the rules that he made was that Raja was not allowed to play with children his age. Therefore he did not have any friends to play with. Grandfather made this rule as he thought that Raja would be spoiled if he played with others.
Grandfather was not very fair in making rules for Raja as he did not allow him to make friends and do things that children normally do.
ii.) Raja says, “Life was not dull.” What does it mean?
Ans. By this, Raja means that even though he did not have any friends he could play with, he was not bored with his life. He had many things to do at his home like play in the garden, catch butterflies and reptiles and enjoy running after the mongoose.
iii.) How did Raja make it rain?
Ans. One evening after heavy rains, the sandalwood tree’s leaves filled with raindrops. Raja thought that if he shook the tree, the raindrops would fall, making it rain. Thus, Raja shook the whole tree with his full might. This is how Raja made it rain.
iv.) How did the uncle know where Raja was?
Ans. Raja’s uncle was a very clever man. He would save Raja from different troubles many times. On the night when Raja was hiding from his Grandfather’s wrath, his uncle came home and enquired about what was happening. Once he got to know of the situation, he looked around the place. Since he knew his nephew well, the uncle easily understood where Raja might be hiding.
v.) Some people around us know us better than others. Why is it so?
Ans. Some people around us know us better than others. This is because sometimes we are unable to realise our characteristics easily. The way we act, think and behave is sometimes better observed by others, especially those who live with us. As a result, another person might know and understand us better than we do ourselves.
vi.) How did people from the village try to help find Raja?
Ans. People from the village helped finding Raj by forming search squads and going to look for Raj. They also provided mental and emotional support to Grandmother. Even though they were unable to find Raj, they provided their full support as much as they could.
vii.) Grandfather was a man of strong will, but he too felt very upset. What made him upset? Which words in the story tell us that he was upset?
Ans. Grandfather is portrayed as a man of strong will and strict discipline. However, he cannot help but feel very upset. This is because it was due to his scolding that Raja had gone into hiding. He became upset as though the night got darker, Raja still did not return home. Incidences such as when Grandfather shouted at everyone to stop acting as if Raja was dead and when he prayed foiiRaja’s return express how Grandfather must have been upset.
viii.) How was the uncle different from the grandfather? Give examples from the story.
Ans. Both the uncle and grandfather are different from each other in various aspects. The uncle is young, clever and easy-going, whereas Grandfather is much more strict and disciplinary. This difference is highlighted in situations where the uncle saves Raja whenever he got into trouble whereas Grandfather imposes rules amd prevents Raja from playing with friends. Another example is when Raja goes missing, Grandfather has a hard time searching for him, but the uncle is able to quickly guess that Raja must be hiding in the cowshed. Thus, both the uncle and Grandfather are quite different from each other.
