1.) Let’s talk
Sit in groups, look at the picture given on pages 2 and 3 and discuss the following with your friends:
a.) Talk about the various shops and people seen in the picture.
Ans. In the picture, one can see a number of shops and different kinds of people here and there. The picture seems to be that of a marketplace where many people are going on about their day,buying things and playing around. There are numerous shops in the marketplace, such as a wood shop called Timber land, a stationery shop, a medicine shop with the name Biyahut Medical. There is also a clothes Shop as well as a bakery called Chepel’s Bakery.
There are different types of people also in the marketplace. There is a person at the woodshop cutting timber, two children with balloons who are playing and laughing. A woman wearing a saree is carrying books in her hand and is looking towards the two playing children, she is probably their mother. There are various vegetable sellers too. A police personnel is also present managing the traffic. A newspaper vendor is sitting and selling newspapers to another person clad in a coat and cap with a muffler. A sweeper is cleaning the streets. A monk is present who is pleasantly looking around his surroundings. Two people from an animal hospital are also there taking a stray dog for treatment.
b.) From which shops can Dawa and KaIden purchase the following items: medicines, phaley, crayons, a t-shirt, a wooden box, chart paper and a geometry box.
Ans. Dawa and Kalden can purchase the given items from the following places –
1.) Medicines – From Biyahut Medical
2.) Phaley – From the Phaley vendor in front of the Dogbu poster
3.) Crayons – From the Stationery Shop
4.) A t-shirt – From the clothes store between Biyahut Medical shop and Chepel’s Bakery
5.) A wooden box – From Timberland Shop
6.) Chart paper – From Stationery Shop
7.) A geometry box – From Stationery Shop
c.) Imagine how Dawa and Kalden felt when they went shopping and tell your friends about their shopping experiences. What would you have done if you were either Dawa or Kalden?
Ans. Dawa and Kalden are two siblings who went to the marketplace for their firsd.shopping experience. They saw a number of shops and stalls selling a variety of items. They also saw different types of people, some were selling goods, some were buying those goods while some others were just going about their day. Both Dawa and Kalden were at first a little overwhelmed when they saw so many shops and people. There was also a lot of noise which made them a bit scared. However, as they walked through the market, they enjoyed the various activities taking place around them. They bought all their necessities such as stationary, clothes, medicines, etc. They also saw a food vendor in the market and bought some food from her. Overall, their first experience at the market was good.
If I were either Dawa or Kalden, I would also have done the same things as them and enjoyed my first shopping experience.
d.) Where are the people taking the injured dog?
Ans. Two people are taking an injured dog and putting it in a van. By the looks of the van, it seems that they belong to an animal hospital that works for animal health and anti-rabies. So the people are taking the injured dog to the hospital for further treatment.
e.) Can you spot the following people in the picture? Find them and describe a few things about them.
Traffic police
Ans. There is a traffic police who is regulating traffic and trying to stop two people from feeding the pigeons on the main road. The police officer is blowing the whistle with force and running towards the people feeding the pigeons. The officer is clad in a blue police uniform with a blue beret cap.
Momo seller
Ans. There is a momo seller in the marketplace. She is wearing a yellow top and green sweater along with a dupatta. She also has a red bindi on her forehead. Her momo stall is small with a big drum of water and mug behind her. She probably uses the water for different purposes like washing dishes and hands. She is busy making the momos.
Sweeper
Ans. There is a sweeper wearing a grey uniform and yellow jacket with red stripes. He has short hair and a mustache. He is holding a long broom with which he is cleaning the road. He seems to be whistling while working.
Milkman
Ans. Although the milkman is not fully visible, I can see his basket in which he is carrying big milk jars. The basket is made out of jute and the jars are of steel.
Teacher
Ans. There is a teacher wearing a yellow saree and a bindi on her forehead. Her grayish hair is in a bun. She is also wearing specs. She is carrying a bag on her shoulder, containing some chart paper, ruler, etc. She is also carrying a few books in her hands. She is looking at two children playing with balloons and smiling at their actions.
Taxi driver
Ans. No, I cannot see any taxi driver.
Guard
Ans. There is a guard sitting by the ATM at the market. He is wearing his uniform and cap. He also has a mustache. He has a long wooden stick, which he is using as a support while he dozes off.
Carpenter
Ans. There is a carpenter at the woodshop named Timberland. The carpenter is wearing a green jacket and grey pants. The carpenter is busy measuring a piece of wood with a measuring tape.
f.) Dawa and Kalden came across an advertisement of a Mini Bazaar when they went to the market. The Baazar is organized by the Women’s Cooperative Society. Look at the advertisement given on the next page and answer the questions that follow.
