- Becquerel
Hello everyone we are familiar that the nuclear force in some elements is weak thus they become unstable. Due to this the atoms and its constituents aren’t bounded strongly with each other. This reduces the mass of nucleons and substance is said to be radioactive.
Radioactivity: –
The phenomenon of spontaneous emission of radiations from radioactive substance is known as radioactive decay.
Radioactivity is nuclear phenomenon in which an unstable nucleus undergoes decay. It is called radioactive decay.
There are three types of decay: –
1.) α- Decay in which a helium nucleus 42He is emitted.
2.) β- Decay in which electrons or positrons are emitted.
3.) γ- decay in which high energy photons
SI unit of radioactivity is named after Sir Henri Becquerel, who won and shared a Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre Curie and Marie Curie in 1903 for their work in discovering radioactivity.
Hence the SI unit of radioactivity is Becquerel. Its symbol is ‘Bq’.
Where, One Becquerel =one decay per second
Important Faq on SI unit of Radioactivity
Q.1) What is CGS unit of radioactivity and how it is calculated?
Answer: Curie is the CGS unit of radioactivity. It is represented by symbol ‘Ci’.
1 Curie is defined as 3.7 x 1010 disintegration per second.
Where, 1 Ci = 3.7×1010 Bq
Q.2) List the elements which are mainly considered as radioactive.
Answer: Following are some radioactive elements with
Elements | Symbol | Life |
Promethium | Pm-145 | 17.4 years |
Polonium | Po-209 | 102 years |
Astatine | At-210 | 8.1 hours |
Radon | Rn-222 | 3.82 days |
Francium | Fr-223 | 22 minutes |
Technetium | Tc-91 | 4.21 x 106 years |
