Introduction
In this chapter, we will learn about Numerical Patterns and its types with examples.
Numerical Patterns
Numerical patterns are sequences of numbers that follow a specific rule.
For Example:- Find the missing number.
1.) 5,10,15,20,__
Here the difference between two numbers is ‘5’.
So the next number in the sequence would be 20+5=25.
2.) 13,10,7,4,__
Here the difference between two numbers is ‘-3’.
So the next number in the sequence would be 4-3=1.
Types of Numerical Patterns
1.) Arithmetic patterns–
It involve adding or subtracting a constant value.
Example-
-8,-4,0,4,8,__
Here the difference between two numbers is ‘4’.
So the next number in the sequence would be 8+4=12
2.) Geometric patterns-
It involve multiplying or dividing by a constant value.
Example :-
1.) 2, 6, 18, 54, __
In this sequence, each term is 3 times the previous term.
So the next number in the sequence would be 54*3=162.
2.) 81, 27, 9, 3,__
In this sequence, each term is 1/3 times the previous term.
So the next number in the sequence would be 3*1/3=1.
3.) Mixed patterns:-
It combine arithmetic and geometric patterns.
Example :-
1.) 3, 8, 18, 36 , __
In this sequence, each term is generated by multiplying the current number by 2 and adding 2 in it.
2.1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, …
In this sequence, each term is generated by adding the current term number to a series of whole numbers to the constant 2.
The pattern is as follows:
- 1+(2+0)=3
- 3+(2+1)=6
- 6+(2+2)=10
- 10+(2+3)=15
- 15+(2+4)=21
- 21+(2+5)=28
Examples for Practice :-
1.) 2,5,8,11,14,?
2.) 3,9,27,81,243,__
3.) 1,4,9,18,31,__
4.) 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,__
5.) 1,8,27,64,125,__
6.) −3,−6,−9,−12,−15,__
7.) 0.5,0.75,1.125,__
