Essay on Is Capital Punishment Justified? for Class 10, 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)
Is Capital Punishment Justified? Essay : Death Penalty, or execution of a person is as a capital punishment for an offense. Capital crimes are crimes that can lead to the death penalty. It’s called capital punishment. Government has been punishing people for centuries for their crimes caused affecting the peace of the society. Capital punishment or in simpler terms the death penalty is applied to people who have done various forms of unlawful behaviour. Among the methods of death sentence were crucifixion, stoning, drowning, impaling, and beheading, as well as lethal gas or injections, electrocution, hanging, or shooting.
Should Capital Punishment be abolished?
Whether the death penalty should be abolished or not is one of the longest debates going on in the civil society and political community in India.Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan has favoured the death penalty. While some supporters of the death penalty believe it is justified act to revenge the wrong doings to the society and to prevent arising of these crimes now and again. It also proves to be cheaper than life imprisonment where in tax payers money is used to feed and support the criminal till his sentence is complete in the prison.
Many human rights organizations oppose the death penalty on one or more of the following grounds: as the believe that killing someone is always inhuman and it is like murdering in a legal way. The death penalty to terrorist or most wanted criminals will not stop future terror attacks against India, but would rather be used by extremists to incite violence and hatred against India. If we are serious about dealing with terrorists, we could do worse if we follow other countries examples like Israel.
The death penalty has no place in modern society, so nobody’s surprised that it’s still used in India, China and the United States. A punishment more severe than death is to make the convict endure endless lectures about capital punishment. Living a harsh life in prison would be a far more painful punishment than a sudden death. In the case of terrorists, they take up their job fully prepared to die for their cause. The death penalty serves only to satisfy apublic sense of punishment and as a tool for pandering politicians.
Conclusion
I strongly believe that we need to reform the laws, especially for the death penalty. The punishment should be so severe that it should remind not only the offenders/terrorists/criminals, but also the people around them about the inhuman acts they committed. At the same time, he should regret his crimes every day and every night and this should act as a deterrent. This will make him a better person and help reduce the crime rate in the country.
