Euthanasia, should it be legalized? Essay : Euthanasia is a procedure of putting one to rest completely by give some high dosage of lethal medicine in so that the pain due to irrecoverable illness if wiped off completely through his death.
Euthanasia is derived from a Greek word known as ‘euthanatos’ which means good death. Euthanasia is given specially to person who are not able to recover from their painful illness and thus to keep them away from this pain by ending their lives.
There are two types of Euthanasia.
The two types of Euthanasia are active and passive. Active euthanasia is a direct way of giving or injecting one’s body with lethal fluid or death causing chemical to end his life so that his does not have to bear the pain from his painful terminal sickness.
Passive euthanasia is a method, where in one is intentionally deprived of his basic needs like food, water, proper oxygen etc. which will eventually cause his death. This is a much slower and uncomfortable process as compared to active euthanasia.
The process of euthanasia is completely different from that of suicide. Where one intentionally kills himself due to depression or other family constraints. Where as in euthanasia the person is already dying due to his painful sickness but needs to be released from his pain and sufferings, this is put to complete rest.
Should Euthanasia be legalized?
Euthanasia is also referred to a process or means of causing death to a sick person. However should it be legalized is the big question. In certain countries like Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland active euthanasia is legalized. The court have held that in India passive euthanasia can be performed as an act to help a patient from his painful vegetative state by withdrawing all forms of life support to end his or her life peacefully. Certain guidelines have been laid by the court of law for passive euthanasia, such that the issue must be first referred to the High Court for seeking final decision as well as the Doctor or the parents of the patient must be on of the petitioners for withdrawal of life support system.
Certain reasons to legalize euthanasia
1) Its gives immediate pain relief to the individuals trauma or pain one is suffering due to his illness.
2) Article 21 of the Constitution provides that if the health condition is continuously degrading to the immense pain one is suffering, then the person has full right to end his life through euthanasia.
3) Euthanasia not only relives the pain of the person suffering the sickness, but also relieves the burden financially and mentally from the relatives of the patient.
Certain reasons why euthanasia should not be legalized
1) Its could affect the values of the doctors and the relationship the doctors share with the patient. As the doctors are sometimes forced to commit euthanasia.
2) As some believe that life is Gift of God, and believe that this should not be taken by any individual as they do not have the right to take the lives of such persons, of what God has gifted.
3) If euthanasia is legalized then it could lead to illegal deaths been taken by persons from different groups without following proper procedures.
Conclusion
Although Euthanasia is proven to be beneficial for the sick patients and the relatives of the patient it can prove to be dangerous as well where it might start becoming a criminal activity and persons taking lives of individuals without proper procedures and rights.
