Difference between Strong and Weak nuclear force
Strong nuclear force
- The force in nucleus of an atom due to which the structure of an atom is stable is known as strong nuclear force.
- It is the strongest force in the universe.
- Strong nuclear force is long range force hence it acts between two particles at very small distance of order about 10-15
- The basic function is to bind the proton and neutrons in nucleus.
- It is charge independent and acts equally between positively charged proton and charge less neutrons.
Weak nuclear force
- The force in between atoms of radioactive elements is known as weak nuclear force.
- It is the stronger in nature that other forces like gravitational force and electromagnetic force.
- In process of radiation of beta decay, alpha decay the atoms of such materials get disintegrated so as to lose its atomic mass in terms of protons and neutrons.
- During beta decay, the nucleus emits an electron and an uncharged particle called neutrino.
- The existence of neutrino was first predicted by Pauli in 1931.
