Answer – Swami didn’t believe to the news of the village lad’s bravery. He can’t imagine that a boy could fight with a tiger and escape from the place.
According to the story, Swami thought that he was not a boy at all but a grown-up person and was very strong. On the other hand, Swami’s father was totally impressed by the boy’s bravery.
(2) What was the challenge given to Swami by his father? How did he receive it?
Answer – The challenge given to Swami by his father was to sleep alone in the office room.
He received it as a mere joke at first. But later he realized that it had become a command of his father.
(3) Describe Swami’s feelings in the office room at night.
Answer – Swami was so frightened and in a miserable condition in the office room. He was unable to sleep at night because he was remembering all the stories of ghost and devils he had heard in his life.
(4) How did Swami catch the burglar?
Answer – When the burglar came near to him, Swami crawled out from under the bench, hugged the burglar tightly and bit on his ankle with his teeth.
(C) Of the following words, which would you choose to describe Swami and why?

Answer – I would like to choose clever, cowardly, courageous and strong to describe Swami. He was clever because he tried his best to dodge his father’s challenge to sleep alone in the office room. He seemed cowardly as he was very much frightened. He also seemed courageous because in spite of being frightened he showed his courage to sleep in the office room at night. He is also strong because the burglar failed to escape when he hugged the burglar tightly and injured him with his teeth.
(D) Various incidents in the story evoke contradictory reactions from Swami and his father. Complete the table given below highlighting the difference of opinion between two.

Answer – Yes, children should be allowed to face nasty situations in their life. It will make them strong and help them to flourish their bravery and courage.

Answer – No, I do not think that Swami’s father is really cruel. He just wanted to make his son capable for handling any critical situation in life by just increasing his courage.

Swami Catches the Burglar
Malgudi, 3rd January: Swami, a boy who reads in class two caught the most notorious house-breaker of the district yesterday. To execute his father’s command, he was sleeping alone in the office room of his house. At midnight, he awoke suddenly and heard some noise which was produced by the burglar. As soon as the burglar came near to him, the boy hugged him using all his strength and attacked him with his teeth. The thundering cry of the burglar awakened all the other members of the house and the burglar was handed over to the police. Everyone praised Swami for his bravery. The police were also grateful to him. They suggested Swami to join the police after growing up.
