Answer:-
In tap root system when a seed germinates, several roots grow out, at the same time, from the base of the stem. Such an arrangement, of the root system, is called the fibrous root system. (5) What is a leaf? Draw a diagram showing different parts of a leaf.
Answer:- The leaf is the green coloured, thin, broad and flat part of a plant. It grows on the shoot at a node. Younger, and smaller, leaves are found at the upper part of the stem while the older ones are on the lower part of the stem. A Eypical leaf has an expanded flat part called the leaf blade or the lamina. The leaf is attached to the stem by a short structure called petiole. It continues through the lamina as a mid-rib which branches out into a fine network called the veins. These veins help in transportation of the food material; they also provide support to the lamina.
(6) Name any two types of stem modifications, giving one example for each type.
Answer:- In some plants stem perfom some special functions as well. Such stems are called modified stems.
- Stem that provides support:-
Some plants, like grapes and pea, have a very weak stem. Since they cannot stand upright, they are supported by thin, long spring-like structures, called tendrils, that grow from the stem. Tendrils coil around some external support, such as a pole or a branch of a tree.
- Stem that manufactures food:-
In some plants, such as cacti, the stem is leaf-shaped, fleshy and green. Such a stem manufactures food for the plant in the absence of leaves.
