A.) Answer the following questions.
1.) Why do solids have a fixed shape and a definite volume?
Answer: The solids have fixed shape and volume because the particles of solid are closely packed with each other and they cannot move.
2.) Briefly describe an activity to show that pure water is a transparent liquid.
Answer:- Take a glass of water and put a stick into it, the stick is clearly visible to us because the glass is transparent and light can pass through it. And pure water is also transparent material because light can pass through it and we can see the object.
3.) Describe an activity to show that a solid can diffuse slowly into a liquid.
Answer: The experiment to show the solids can slowly diffuse into the water –
Take some solid particles of potassium permanganate and pour it into the glass of water. After some time we can see the colour of water changes into pink. This is due to the diffusion of potassium permanganate.
4.) What is a ‘saturated solution’? How can one prepare a saturated solution of common salt in water?
Answer: A solution which cannot dissolve more amount of given substance at a given temperature is called a saturated solution. Take a glass of water at some common salt in the glass and stir it again and some common salt and again you can see the particles are dissolved in the water then add some sugar into water and stir and again add some salt into it after adding a particular amount of salt we can see sugar is not dissolved in water this is the saturated solution.
5.) Suggest one activity to show the effect of temperature on the solubility of a solid in water.
Answer:- Take 1 glass of normal water and 1 glass of hot water add sugar into water and stir it up to dissolve and continue adding sugar into both glasses till it stops dissolving.
We can observe the amount of sugar dissolve more in hot water as compared to normal water. This shows that the solubility increases with increase in temperature
