Introduction
- Length Measurement:
Length is the measurement of distance. In the metric system, we use units like millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers to measure length.
Metric Units of Legths:
- Millimeter (mm):
The smallest unit of length in the metric system.
1 meter = 1000 millimeters.
- Centimeter (cm):
Larger than millimeters but smaller than meters.
1 meter = 100 centimeters.
- Meter (m):
A standard unit of length in the metric system.
1 kilometer = 1000 meters.
- Kilometer (km):
The largest unit of length in the metric system.
Used for longer distances.
Examples :-
- Millimeters (mm):
Thickness of a credit card.
- Centimeters (cm):
Height of a smartphone screen.
- Meters (m):
Height of a person, the length of a car.
- Kilometers (km):
Distance between two cities, length of a marathon.
Converting Metric Units:
From Smaller to Larger Units:
1.) Millimeters to Centimeters:
- To convert millimeters to centimeters, divide the number of millimeters by 10.
(since 1 centimeter = 10 millimeter).
Example :- Convert 20 millimeters to cenimeters.
20 millimeters = 20 ÷ 10 centimeters
=2 centimeters.
2.) Converting Centimeters to Meters:
- To convert centimeters to meters, divide the number of centimeters by 100.
(since 1 meter = 100 centimeter).
Example :- Convert 400 centimeters to meter.
400 centimeters = 400 ÷ 100 meters
= 4 meter.
From Larger to Smaller Units:
3.) Converting Kilometers to Meters :
- To convert kilometers to meters, multiply the number of kilometers by 1000
(since 1 km = 1000 m).
Example :- Convert 4 kilometers into meters
4kilometers = 4 x 1000 meters
=4000 meters.
4.) Converting Meters to Centimeters :
- To convert meters to centimeters, multiply the number of meters by 100.
(since 1 m = 100 cm).
Example :- Convert 5 meters into centimeters
5 meter = 5 x 100 centimeter
=500 centimeter.
Let’s understand this conversion by diagram :-
Examples :-
1.) Convert 420 mm to cm:
Solution -1 centimeter = 10 millimeter
Hence, 420 millimeter = 420 ÷10
= 42 centimeter.
2.) Convert 3.5 km to m:
Solution -since 1 km = 1000 m
Hence, 3.5 km= 3.5 x 1000 m
= 3500 m.
3.) Convert 2.2 m to cm:
Solution -since 1 meter = 100 centimeter
Hence, 2.2 m= 2.2 x100 cm
= 220 cm.
3.) Convert 800 cm to m:
Solution -since 1 m = 100 cm
Hence, 800 cm= 800 ÷100m
= 8m.
Real life applications based on metric units on Length (Word Problems) :-
1.) Jadhav has a garden that is 480 centimeters wide. She wants to know how many meters wide her garden is?
Solution -since 1 m = 100 cm
Hence, 480 cm= 480 ÷100m
= 4.8m.
2.) The length of a school running track is 400 meters. How many kilometer is it?
Solution -since 1 km = 1000 m
Hence, 400 cm= 400 ÷1000 km
= 0.4 km.
3.) A girl bought a scarf that was 1.2 meters long. How many centimeters long the scarf is ?
Solution -since 1 meter = 100 centimeter
Hence, 1.2 m= 1.2 x100 cm
= 120 cm.
