Introduction
Capacity is the measure of the amount of space a container can hold, especially in relation to liquids. It is expressed using units like liters, milliliters, gallons, quarts, pints, and cups.
Customary Units of Capacity:
- Gallon (gal)
- Quart(qt)
- Pint(pt)
- Cup (cup)
Example :
1.) Gallon (gal) :
- 1 gallon = 4 quarts
- 1 gallon = 8 pints
- 1 gallon = 16 cups
2.) Quart (qt):
- 1 quart = 2 pints
- 1 quart = 4 cups
3.) Pint (pt):
- 1 pint = 2 cups
4.) Cup (cup):
- 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
Converting Customary Units:
1.) Converting Gallons to Quarts, Pints, and Cups:
- To convert gallons to quarts, multiply the number of gallons by 4
(since 1 gallon = 4 quarts).
Example :- Convert 3 gallon to quarts.
3 galllon = 3 x 4 quarts
= 12 quarts.

Example :- Convert 2 ½ gallon to quarts.
2 ½ galllon = 2 x 4 + 4 x ½ quarts
= 8 + 2
= 10 quarts.

2 qt |
- To convert gallons to pints, multiply the number of gallons by 8
(since 1 gallon = 8 pints).
Example :- Convert 5 gallon to pints.
5 galllon = 5 x 8 pints
= 40 pints.
- To convert gallons to cups, multiply the number of gallons by 16
(since 1 gallon = 16 cups).
Example :- Convert 4 gallon to cups.
4 galllon = 4 x 16 cups
= 64 cups.
2.) Converting Quarts to Pints and Cups:
- To convert quarts to pints, multiply the number of quarts by 2
(since 1 quart = 2 pints).
Example :- Convert 2quarts to pints.
2quarts = 2 x 2pints
=4 pints.
- To convert quarts to cups, multiply the number of quarts by 4
(since 1 quart = 4 cups).
Example :- Convert 3 quarts to cups.
3 quarts = 2 x 4 cups
= 12 cups.
3.) Converting Pints to Cups:
- To convert pints to cups, multiply the number of pints by 2
(since 1 pint = 2 cups).
Example :- Convert 3 pints to cups.
3 pints = 3 x 2 cups
= 6 cups.
Let’s understand this conversion by diagram :-
Examples :-
- Convert 4 ½ gallons to pints:
Solution -since 1 gallon = 8 pints
Hence, 4 ½ gallon = 4 x 8 + 8 x ½ pints
= 32 + 4 pints (pt).
= 36 pints (pt).
- Convert 3 ½ Quarts to cups:
Solution -since 1 quarts = 4cups
Hence, 3 ½ quarts = 3 x 4cups + 4 x ½
= 12 + 2cups.
= 14 cups.
- Convert 24 pints to gallons:
Solution -since1 gallon = 8 pints
Hence, 24pints = 24 ÷ 8 gallons
= 3 gallons(gal).
- Convert 64cups to quarts:
Solution -since 1 quart = 4 cups
Hence, 64 cups = 64 ÷4 quarts
= 16 quarts (qt).
- Convert 16 ½ pints to quarts:
Solution -since 1 quart = 2 pints
Hence, 16pints = 16 ½ ÷2pints
= 8 ½ pints (pt).
- Convert 80 cups to gallons:
Solution -since 1 gallon = 16cups
Hence, 80cups = 80÷16gallons
= 5 gallons(gal).
- Convert 80 cups to gallons:
Solution -since 1 gallon = 16cups
Hence, 80 cups = 80 ÷ 16 gallons
= 5 gallons(gal).
Real life applications based on units on Weight (Word Problems) :-
1.) You are baking a cake, and the recipe calls for 2 quarts of milk. How many gallons of milk do you need?
Solution :- since 1 gallon = 4 quarts
Here , 2 quarts = 2 ÷4 gallons
= 0.5 gallons.
2.) If Your car’s gas tank has a capacity of 15 gallons. How many pints is it ?
Solution : (since 1 gallon = 8 pints).
Here, we have to Convert 15 gallon to pints.
5 galllon = 15 x 8 pints
=120 pints.
3.) For a cookie recipe you need 5 pints of choco chips. How many cups is it ?
Solution : (since 1 pint = 2 cups).
Here , we have to Convert 5 pints to cups.
5 pints = 5 x 2 cups
= 10 cups.
