Understanding Volume Concept of Composite Figures Grade 5
Introduction
Volume for composite figures grade 5 involves breaking down the figures into simpler shapes and finding the volume of each component.
Composite Figures:
• Identify Basic Shapes:
The Composite figures are often made up of simpler geometric shapes like cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, and pyramids.
• Divide into Sections:
Break down the composite figure into sections that can be treated as individual shapes.
- Let’s understand how to figure our Volume of composite figures grade 5 through example
Example:
1) Find length, width and height of each prism.
Solution:
The above figure can be considered as a composite figure. As it is a combination of two geometric shapes.
• Find the length of prism A.
Length = 6 cm
Width = 4 cm
Height =12 cm
• Find the length of prism B.
Length = 10 cm
Width = 2 cm
Height =3 cm
2) Find length, width and height of each prism.
• Find the length of prism A.
Length = 7 cm
Width = 3 cm
Height =10 cm
• Find the length of prism B.
Length = 8 cm
Width = 5 cm
Height =4 cm.
3) Find length, width and height of each prism.
• Find the length of prism A.
Length = 7 cm
Width = 2 cm
Height =3 cm
• Find the length of prism B.
Length = 3 cm
Width = 2 cm
Height =6 cm
Volume of composite Figures:
1) Find the volume of given composite figure.
Solution:-
• Find the length of prism A.
Length = 12 cm
Width = 2 cm
Height =5 cm
Now, volume =length x width x height.
Volume of prism A = 12 x 2 x 5
=120 cubic cm.
• Find the length of prism B.
Length = 3 cm
Width = 2 cm
Height =4 cm
Now, volume =length x width x height.
Volume of prism B = 3 x 2 x 4
=24 cubic cm.
• To find the total volume of figure, add the volume of prism A and B.
Total volume = volume of prism A + Volume of prism B
= 120 + 24 cubic cm.
= 144 cubic cm.
2) Find the volume of given composite figure.
Solution:-
• Find the length of prism A.
Length = 12 m
Width = 2 m
Height =4 m
Now, volume =length x width x height.
Volume of prism A = 12 x 2 x 4
=96 cubic meters.
• Find the length of prism B.
Length = 4 cm
Width = 3 cm
Height =6 cm
Now, volume =length x width x height.
Volume of prism B = 4 x 3 x 6
=72 cubic meters.
• To find the total volume of figure, add the volume of prism A and B.
Total volume = volume of prism A + Volume of prism B
= 96 + 72 cubic meter.
= 168 cubic meters.
Exercise:-
1. Find the length, width and height of given prism 1.
2. Find the length, width and height of given prism 2.
3. Find the volume of given prism.
